Blank slate needs kitchen!

I live in a row home and I'm gutting the first floor and turning it into an open dining/kitchen space! I have a general idea for the layout, but would love advice on the best layout (such as is a 10' island right? How wide? ). I'm going to do the island as overlay cabs, with minimal seating and room for: sink, dishwasher, a trash cabinet, another big cabinet to keep pet food in, and storage. On the wall I hope to do a range flanked by appliance garages so I can hide my many appliances when I want the place to look perfect!

I want to maximize storage space while keeping a clean aesthetic. And for folks who are just going to tell me to just hire a designer - I enjoy doing this type of thing myself, I'm not hiring a designer by choice, I appreciate your thoughts!
