Painting Kitchen Cabinets

As part of my lipstick reno, we are going to have the kitchen cabinets painted and hopefully soapstone countertops put in, new sink, and kitchen range hood. Today I'm hoping that you all can give me some advice on colors for the cabinets. Our first thought is a white color, not too cream, not too yellow white, but not too bright white..any thoughts, experiences, ideas you can all share i would really appreciate it.

Sherwin Williams Dover White is a popular color.

Thank you, I will look it up! I just saw a photo of griege on top and charcoal on the bottom, brilliant, but not sure it's lasting..

I like your kitchen. Why don’t you think about switching out something small like the pendant lights too see if you like the results first.

I would keep the cabs. Can hou match them? If so, put more cabs to the ceiling with crown. Maybe glass fronts and lighted on top. I would change counters and splash only. I went from stained mahogany to painted off white. Huge mistake. Every spot and nick shows! Horrible upkeep.

Whatever you decide, if you do paint them white, be sure it do all the proper steps so that the wood grain DOES NOT show through. Otherwise, leave as is or consider buying new doors. I would personally gut the whole thing and get stacked cabinets, w/crown molding and inset cabinet doors in white.

Thank you all!! I saw a few pictures with similar cabinets that looked really nice with soapstone counters. The problem keeping the cabinets the same is that they are pretty worn out, the picture doesn't show that at all, and the original install was a mess, they all need readjusting, which is t hard. I'm nervous about painting them, i truly am, but in real life they are rough looking. A full refit is cost prohibitive, or I would be tearing down that wall with the sink as there is a huge family room behind there! It would make a beautiful great room. The counters are laminate in good shape but never the less laminate in a large and pretty expensive house, so it would be nice and appropriate upgrade. Shocked to hear that the cost could be 7-9k! If so, I'll buy new doors to upgrade!

Doors and drawers are the most expensive part of cabinets. Having new doors and drawers professionally finished with a factory level conversion varnish durable finish will be as costly as having the existing ones professionally done. Add professional installation and new hardware or new drawers and you will have spent more than buying all new cabinets.

Do nothing until you can do everything. Properly.

Sophie you love those sprayed conversion varnish cabinets. They are great for us too their touch kits do not work and will not out last a really well done paint job. We regularly repaint those cabinets that resemble cheap furniture with absolutely no character or personality.

MS Colors, I'm confused with some of the technology..what is sprayed conversion varnish? The painter giving me the quote will spray the cabinets with a melamine type paint, I have seen his work it is very nice. My biggest concern is that we will see the install flaws more once they are painted. I do get the do it right or not at all tho, it truly is a dilemma as we have ten to twelve years left in this house and then it will be downsize time..so spending more than 30k on my upgrade is not practical imo.

Sophie, that is aweful! I have seen this fellows work, and he makes the cabinets look new. I expect them to be more fragile, but kids are gone and just the two of us. Although I'm starting to think maybe a light sanding and revarnish may be the answer?

Refinishing is more work than painting. None of this is truly cost effective unless you are willing and able to DIY and accept less than professional results. Labor is the largest single remodel component. Spending labor on time intensive jobs on old questionable products has zero return.

That money is better allocated on doing a budget replacement remodel. It adds more value. 10 years of use is more than enough time to justify the expenditure of a full redo. You will get 10 years of enjoyment out of it, and it will still be in good enough shape at resale. 10 more years of wear on items of questionable structural integrity now, equals doing the remodel when you go to sell and not getting to enjoy any of it.
