The labor cost for the low end material will be somewhat larger than for better quality material. It is extra work trying to figure out how to get the worst of the materials installed. You will also have more waste because there will be junk you just cant use. Even if you are doing the work yourself, your time has value so think about the real total finished cost and figure out how much money you are actually saving .

Some people like the utility grade or the shorts but I think it just looks like low end junk. It is going to have splits, holes, warped pieces, uneven finish in spots, and that is just too much extra work for the savings in my opinion. I would spend a bit more money and go for a product that will probably hold up better to the abuse it may get from tenants. I know the heartache of seeing a beautiful, newly installed oak floor that needed refinished after only three years of a destructive tenant.

We used a 2.00 laminate in bedrooms and family room- we had 4000 sq foot to do and couldn’t bear the hardwood coat. I have to admit we have gotten a ton of compliments and most people think it’s hardwood.

I know a lot of landlords rave about Shaw's luxury vinyl plank for rentals rather than crappy laminates. I think it is sold at HD.

I don't want laminate. it can't be spot repaired. and cheap laminate is way worse than cheap wood.
