These are good..have both, most all apples for our climate have a tartness to it, except Renown....got rid of this one, a apple with zero tartness is useless in my books!
Also love Trailman Crab and Sept. Ruby mix or on their own, great juicing apples!

I plan to do some grafting with Norda this spring. What do you think of it as an apple for cider?

I am not familiar with Trailman but if it is sweet and tart, then it would be just the ticket. I have picked a lot of Trail crabapple the last few years. They are very sweet and juicy with a bit more astringency than I like for sweet cider. But no tartness. Their main virtue is that they are hardy in Winnipeg, and produce large crops almost every year. So people are always asking me to come and pick.

I picked this apple at a friend's place. He didn't know the name. It looks to me like Goodland. What do you think?

Yes...looks like Goodland, also good for juicing. Norda or Norkent is the same apple in my books makes wonderful sweet apple juice.

Konrad, when does Trailman ripen in relation to Carrol? Also, how old are the September Ruby trees in that picture?

Trailman is about 2 weeks later then the early Noland..about end of Aug. early Sept. Carrol about the same time. Sept. Ruby is about 18 years old from seed.

These mix I juiced up for friends..Norland in front but also the not ripe Trailman to the right in the back.

konrad, if your sept. ruby is from seed is it still a sept. ruby? Or, is it something better, it looks really good. Possibility of scions?

I suspect it's a new variety unless sept Ruby is one of the rare cases it's true to seed. Can only think of two that are this way.

Nice to see a seedling apple! I too are growing some seedings up and hope to some breeding/crossing (on small scale) of some fave cider apples.

Sept. Ruby should be thinned out which I did in the above picture, if not then they're smaller and clump up like this...picture from Sept. 22.

Norland is best early sweet cider apple I find, starting mid Aug. ..got rid of Parkland and Rescue since these are smaller less tasty and ripen the same time...can handle only so many.

Norland at this stage..pick and juice within a day or two max, preferably pick a week earlier or when seeds just turn from white to brown, early apples shouldn't be sitting around..pick and juice the same day is best. Later apples like Norkent can store for about 2 weeks outside, in the fridge over two month.
