Is this tile pattern possible?

Hi all! We've come to the backsplash predicament (ugh and yay). The island and perimeter granites are different, but found a 12x12 mosaic tile that harmonizes with both. See pics. The halt here is with the oven backslplash. I'd like this 3x6 Crema Marfil (easy cleaning) and possibly 3 decos inside a frame. Frame to be either a Cream Marfil Ogee or Bronze Border.

My question is, can a 3x6 herringborne pattern incorporate a 4x4 deco? I've searched high low but haven't found anything. I've only seen square tiles. Next, the bronze frame might be fancier but I like the cream ogee. Will it look too bland? It certainly will be close match to the island granite (Taj Majal) which I'm stoked over! Thanks!

Chess, you think? the 2x3 is glossy & polished, and the mosaic is intended only for perimeter. I feel the island has good depth (7×6) to not have to worry too much about stains.

If I understand correctly, the 3x6 tiles are only going in the focal area? If that's the case, use a different size tile like a 2x4 to work with the 4x4 deco.

All of that is way too much & it's going to take away from your beautiful stone on our countertops. I think MOP backsplash would look amazing here. It comes in all different shapes & sizes. I would add texture without adding clashing looks.

Like the mosaic tile. Using a 4” deco with a 3 x 6 herringbone will be very busy and labor intensive $$$. The overlap of the 3 x 6 tiles for the herringbone means 3” rather than 4” to match the deco. End result won’t be a true herringbone. Alternatives: find a 3” deco, kill the deco, or try finding a 4 x 8 that matches the 3 x 6 (see if scale looks good(.

Go very simple. You have way too much going on. Start over on the backsplash selection. Think one simple elegant backsplash material that makes your countertop the star.

this is a very busy, almost Tuscan style backsplash. is that what you want? you don't have any backsplash ideas in your idea books. what look do you like?

I have a 4x4 tumbled marble behind my stove that I loathe. you do not want the little 1x1's back there.

Thanks all for ideas. These are the things that keep me up at night. Mostly I just want to cry. I have ideabooks but really the pics are all over the place (in styles). I dont like shiny flashy. I like simple, traditional and country as well. The perimeter counter is black honed matte and cabinets white. I like the texture and neutrals of the 12x12. Some shiny contrasting 12x12 mosaic tiles drive me nuts. I realize the cream and decos are nice but they dont really "go" with the other backsplash. What if I do away with the oven backdrop and put up a wallmount stainles steel shelf???? Hubby not too thrilled, adding "its won't be restaurant"..ugh.

simple and traditional,,,,that's probably going to be one of your subway type of tiles. look for one in a 2x8,3x9, 3x12 size if you want a little more modern, otherwise go w/the 3x6.

what about a Calacatta marble? these are a 2x4 beveled, but you can get them in any size or shape

Encore Ceramics has these crackles glass subways in over 50 glaze colors

or, a terracotta type of tile. these come in whites/grays and everything in between. Arto tiles.

    too busy

I'd do the crema marfil everywhere and yes, use the decos if you like 'em and can make them fit. I think those two elements would be really nice in there.

The 4x4s can be inserted just by cutting out a square in the herringbone pattern, but that might not be the look you're after. They won't go into the pattern naturally unless you switch tile sizes.

Lose the mosaic and the frame. Don't need them.

Just do a plain tile backsplash. If you do go with the crema marfil make sure what you you order is the colour you want and check boxes before they install. It can really vary in colour and you don't want it to clash with your counter stone.

So true daisychain, marnle tends to vary!
Thank you all are marvelous. I'm playing with the plain backsplash look at jobsite. The counter is honed black with very few vague white veining. Should there be a (black) lip here rising to the backsplash????

I dont have granite yet, so used the back of a frame for funsies....me no like.

I like everything you've chosen, but I think you've chosen too many items. Two different granites + a mosaic tile + metal accents -- it's just too much. Thoughts:

    - I'd use the granite you like best on both the perimeter and the island, but -- admittedly -- I don't go for the mix-y mix look.

    - Your cabinets are simple, calm, a neutral, right? They're the supporting cast, not the star. You need to pick either the backsplash OR the granite to be the stand-out item -- but don't allow them to fight one another for dominance.

    - If you go with a simple backsplash, I think you can use the metal accent tiles ... or -- if you go with a simple granite -- you could insert them into the mosaic than placed diagonally /surrounded by fancy tile layout.

    - I like mother-of-pearl, but it says bathroom to me. It's more shiney and stand-out than I personally would use in a kitchen.

    - I also wouldn't go with subways. They're overdone.

    - I wouldn't worry about cleaning an intricate backsplash ... how dirty do they actually get? how often do they actually need cleaning?

I wouldn't recommend doing the "lip" trim along the bottom of the backsplash. Your kitchen will look wonderful; hope you share some pics when it's done.

Hi all! Scratched initial deco idea. Playing with backsolash samples for (perimeter and 2 tier island). Options D761, Crema Marfil honed, Camila polished. See pics. Please tell me whay you think.

Granite not in kitchen yet, just delivered and still loaded on my contractor's mack. Lighting I am sure will change inside...

the dal tile is meh. w/the black stone, no. I would pick something else. the Marfil is ok. still think there are better options.

these are some of Encore Ceramics tiles. (hundred glazes and many shapes, blends and sizes)

these in a nice crackle glaze would look beautiful w/the Taj. they're more expensive than Dal, but against that quartzite, you have to splurge a little.

these just show some other other blend colors and styles

these crackle colors are beautiful w/the taj. you could get them in the size, below.

    3x8 crackle in Bali color.

these are from CleTile. would look nice w/the black.

The granite is in...times a ticking for the final backsplash selection...
Thanks Beth. I love the Encores, but just not sure about of all that shine. Next the Taj Majal seems too flashy and against the honed granite its totally different. I guess thats why I liked the first 12x12 mosaic tole initially. It had marbles, combined earth colors & both textures, it just will not work behind oven....

The MEH made me giggle, I thought the same...

    Island, no sink yet though
black granite still not inside yet but worked on outback.

Between kids and house its hard to make it out to keep bringing samples. I wish I could. Hubby is already giving me the evil eye because I am not "ready" with it.

Here is Camila. What do you think?

That Camila still looks like a porous stone. Between that and it being small (lots of grout lines), it will be more of a pain in the butt to keep clean than a glazed tile.

no. wrong tone. too grayish brown. don't like it w/the stone or the stain color of your cabinets. It's also too mottled and too busy looking. you need a simpler backsplash and no small mosaics (unless they are a solid color/tone)

i like this carrara and brown marble w/your Taj.

some others. Vanilla subway, mother of pearl and almond color crackle, 4x4's

Feeling like I don't know what I'm doing... ..No. I definitely don't know what I'm doing. And yes mottled, " ..too freckled?? " was my underlying thought. I could quire pun it. Is it normal to feel that I have no more energy to keep looking??? Your ideas are inspiring. Those are beautiful actually. I definitely don't want to plug in m colors that take away...i.e. that stain on island. It did not make me too happy. Sadly I have no time nor energy to take on another project right now.

Nira. take a break for a week or so. let the countertops be installed. there is no hurry to do a backsplash. It can be done at anytime. having a bare wall will be sufficient. Tell hubby you'll feel like you will pick something that will end up being wrong, which will end up costing him more money. Take a break.

Thanks! am as you can see the protective coat was left on the hood (grrr) Hubby never seems to find the time so I will have to figure it out. Also the upper chimney has not been lifted. Is it me or has he ZERO interest. Honesltly now I am not the kind of person to nag something to be taken care of. When I ask I do so politely and patiently, but this is ridiculous we moved in April. I am so frustrated.

It's possible he doesn't "see it" anymore. Lots of people move in and get busy with their lives and never go back to finish the details. It takes someone, you, to notice and follow up.

Is that hood white with silver trim? That looks SO much nicer than the other hoods I see pics of here on HOUZZ.

Ask him what tools he needs and go get them out. Then tell him it's time and you're ready to help.

Chess, it is stainless steel. The coating has letters on it.
Jennifer, good idea. I have tried that one.

Oh LOL! I'd probably leave the white coating on! :-)

    (J/K!)

I'm not clear on what you mean that "the upper chimney has not been lifted". Do you mean that it's not flush with the ceiling? If so, that sounds like improper installation and your installer (hubby?) needs to fix it. Regarding the protective film, it's easy to strip off with just fingers, but it should stay on until all installation work is complete.

Jennifer, the upper part wasn't lifted. Contractor a long with hubby worked together to mount it. I found a video. Looks like I have work to do once kids go back to school:

Towards end of home project money phased out, contractor moved on and we were left with minor things, i.e. wall plates, sporadic floor trimming, unpainted cabinets. Truly minorinor considering this was a big job from the get go (post hurricane flooding re-construction of all sheetrock removal and framing re-work due to termite damage).
