they aren't bad but just a little brown tips, cant tell if they are from normal spring or just too much winter sun ?

Have they been watered properly?

They really don't look that bad. I can't imagine clipping off any dead tips will cause problems, since you would be removing so little.

they were a little dry when i bought them but i have re-watered them all the other day. I know they aren't that bad. If it is just winter color do i still need to prune ? Or will it green out again in the spring?

I'll be perfectly honest.. I can't figure out how to zoom in on pictures when using this website on my phone :) Clicking on the picture just opens one in a new window that is the same size.

From what I can see, though, it does not look like the normal winter bronzing, and I wouldn't expect the damaged leaves to improve.

That being said, if those were my shrubs, I would just plant them (when weather allows) and not worry about it. The damage appears to be incredibly minor and the spring growth flush is on its way.

It seems the issue was much needed water!! I have watered gently this week and all the sudden they have perked up and most green has gone. I suppose they are getting more shade than their previous condition of sitting outside in the oprn sun all day too. But they have been looking much better.

Just slice off the pancake. Is there a reason you aren't getting them planted? Life will be much easier for them and you once they're in the ground.

The plants appear to be extremely root bound, which is a very common problem with nursery grown container stock. And would account for them being thirsty - too filled with roots so any water goes straight through. You will want to remove the roots extending beyond the container as floral described, then remove the container and do some serious work on the rootball itself, loosening and straightening out the root system as best you can. Won't hurt to do whatever trimming is necessary to accomplish this.

Then get them planted ASAP!

And.. they are in ! Looks great. Wow they were all bound so bad. I felt strange cutting them but it was a giant ball. I have the main row of boxwood, then my gardenias in front of the Formosa azaleas, with some big blue liriope for accents. I love the look, just need mulch now.

Fresh mulch always helps ! I just need something in between the liriope and the camellia.

Boxwood look great in front of the hydrangeas, the hydrangeas are just coming out so it looks small in the area.

I havent finished shed but I added some radican gardenias here in front of the Formosa azaleas

I bet they are loving their new place now, with all that place for the roots to spread :) I love boxwoods.
