Kitchen - walls and dogs and wainscot

I have a long empty wall in my kitchen which leads to a door to a sunroom and then the backyard. We are still in the middle of remodeling so that is the only back door in use. There is another door in the kitchen but it's not operable as there are no exterior steps to it (yet!).

I plan to put a piece of furniture on that wall once we are done remodeling but right now the kitchen is still renovation central - the contractors cut through the kitchen to get to the back and tools and supplies are brought through this way.

Anyway - the wall leading to the door is constantly dirty. I'm thinking I need to add some sort of wainscot to the wall so I'm not constantly painting. What do you think about a brick or tile wainscot? Will a paneled wainscot collect dust?

I'm not sure i understand...but if you are still in the middle of a renovation, I'd just let the wall get dirty and then worry about it once renovations are complete.

MDF, painted with a semi-gloss or gloss paint, will be far easier to clean thansheetrock.

My son has two small kids and the sheetrock on the back of their island is SO dirty! I know what you're talking about!

I have wood panels, like my cabinets under the counter of my peninsula so that kicking feet won't smudge it up so much. So, my recommendation is to match the wainscot to your cabinet panel design. I'd make it at least shoulder height in case you want to add coat hooks at some point.

It's up to you if you want to match the color of the cabinets, or the color of your walls. I'd do one or the other. I wouldn't add a third paint color.

Tile is an option, but it will be so much more expensive to install-- and may throw off your gorgeous kitchen.

Here's an example of a style that might work with your cabinets. Just run Swiffer over it to dust.

sue j - I'm not concerned about the mess now but it's clear that wall is going to be an issue even after the remodel

dyhgarden - thanks. I was thinking of a paneled wall like that in the color of the walls (which may change when we are done as it's not my favorite.)
