Good orchid shows

Hey everyone! If I wanted to travel for an orchid show, is there a particular orchid show in the United States that is known to be spectacular? Or is there one thats particularly large? I live in Oklahoma, and would be happy to travel anywhere in the US. Thanks :)

have been to a whole bunch of eastern US orchid shows. Many shows have come and gone, but currently the best in FLA is the redlands orchid festival. MANY growers/plant brokers from all over the world. It has many species opportunity that u would not normally see from South America and Asia. Many of these growers will bring specific ordered plants if you contact them in advance. Great opportunity to ask all the questions you have and to attend culture classes given by superbly qualified lecturers.

As it is in the HUB of Florida orchid growers, it is easy for them to truck their specimens for judging. The displays are memorable. Bring lots of memory storage with cameras. It is usually very warm by that time in Homestead area, dress accordingly.

I make the 700 miles round trip from north florida yearly. There are usually local societies that will arrange for bus trips at reduced cost.

Thanks to both of you! I would definitely like to go check out OKC’s show at some point. I’m in Tulsa so it won’t be too far of a drive.

As for florida, looks like my husband and I are making the drive in May!

Jordan, the OOS (Oklahoma Orchid Society) show is May 12 and 13 in Oklahoma City. I hope you'll be able to make it out :)

Not technically a show, but I’m going to Hausermann’s open house March 2-4 in Illinois. Been wanting to go for years; daughter and I both order plants from them. She gave me the trip for my birthday.

It might be worth thinking about what types of orchids you favor, because the plants that show up for competition tend to be what is in bloom at that particular time of year. For example, when I go to a show in Feb/March, I can expect to see many dendrobium and cymbidiums. When I visit a local fall show, other species are more prevalent.
