Have to admit hubby is right. Runner is too busy an too small. A plain rug. I would get one at least the size of width of door area. Could go under stool.

I would go with a natural fiber rug to bring in some warmth and pull the color from your bench. I would paint the door a few shades lighter than the walls for contrast.

A rectangle that fills most of the space between the wall and closet. Do not extend it into the walkway.. If you have a covered entry with a rug outside, you don't need a rug at all inside. I would go with plain gray and not make it an accent.

Agree with the comments about the rug. It should be plain and much bigger. Is there to be trim (preferably white) around the door? I would be a little concerned about the robin’s egg blue directly against your wall color

A shallow solid gray rug, that doesn't interfere with opening the front door, as wide as the front door and as deep as the closet door, to fill up the nook space.
