Building code for kitchen backsplashes

Is a backsplash required by code in a residential kitchen? I am being told that a home inspector will require a 4 inch granite splash at a minimum.

We have granite countertop but don’t want to install a backsplash on kitchen counters with the new build. We have a pot filler above cooktop but the sink is on the island.

What building code applies here?

I "think" the IRC would be the place to look for attaching fixtures (sink) to a wall. As you don't have a sink, but do have the potfiller...interesting. But, also your local rules would trump if more strict. I believe the reason is to make the counter waterproof so water doesn't run down behind. As for 4" ?

Mostly, give your local a call and ask.

Only your local authorities can answer code questions for sure. I didn't have to have one here in SC, and I have two sinks and a range against the walls. It varies everywhere you go- I even got two different answers from two different inspectors in the same office!

I didn't have to have a backsplash here in western MA. Your local rules may vary.

I may add one eventually.

I've never heard of such a requirement and usually I don't do tile backsplashes or 4" runs either so I seriously doubt it. However check local building codes online or simply call your city/town building inspector.
