are traditional white pedestal sinks passe?

I have a small, narrow bathroom (railroad?) shower, sink and toilet all on same wall. The shower is small. To enlarge shower, I need to make vanity smaller. thinking of traditional pedestal sink so the room doesn't 'stop' at the under sink vanity. Don't need the vanity, but do need the surface area around the sink. Dopn't want a wall mouted sink as small kiddos might sit or hang on it.

Just wanted to add a comment about your fear of children hanging off a wall mounted sink. We had an ensuite with a double shower. Many years ago when my sons were probably about 4 and 5 they loved using our double shower because it was much bigger and more fun than their standard shower. One day we heard a strange noise while they were in there and upon investigation found our wall mounted ceramic soap dish had snapped off the wall. Upon interrogation, they said they hadn't been swinging on it - it just broke. Yeah right boys. When one of my sons later sprouted a large bruise on his backside where he obviously fell onto the tiled floor the evidence was overwhelming and the confessions came freely. Children see anything suspended as something to hang off. Good choice in not going with something wall mounted.

In answer to your original question, I like pedestal sinks as a space saving option especially when used in conjunction with shelves and/or niches. They can be very fashionable. How much stuff is stored in a bathroom which is never used - it can teach users to be more economical by only buying what you really need.

Yes, pedestals never go out of style. Another option, which sometimes gives you a bit of storage and a towel rack as well, would be a console sink:

Some are quite large, but this American Standard Retrospect is available for under $600 on build.com right now, and it's only 27" wide, so suitable for a small bath.

ETA Or there's the Edgemere for a a more contemporary look:

They continue to be sold and they continue to look good, but they also continue to have no counter space and thus be very impractical for a family bath (unless you have some incredibly well-design shelving immediately next to the sink).

Line up the stuff you keep on the counter now. Add a hairdryer if you use one. That's how big your pedestal sink's edge space needs to be. Some of them have as much as six or eight inches of space in addition to the sink. Others have no space for anything other than a bar of soap. Those are the ones many homeowners wish they'd never installed in family bathrooms, fashionable or not.

We had little choice in our tiny bathroom, but we had a huge niche installed for storage.

Are pedestal sinks actually supported by the pedestal? I thought in most cases now the sink is still wall mounted and the pedestal is just decorative.
