Broken Pipes while De-Winterizing

I just restored water to our house after it had been winterized for 3 months, but I had several copper pipe bursts. Two were on the lines to our washing machine. They're vertical copper pipes directly off the main. I also had a radiant heat pipe burst in the bathroom. These pipes were all empty and the current temperature is around 60 degrees. I turned the water on slowly to keep the pressure low. Could extreme cold weaken empty pipes? Or could the water pressure cause them to burst when re-filling them? What could have caused this?
