starting with nothing

my husband and I just moved to the States. we are so excited about our apartment and the view of the pool from the windows. I like bright modern and/or colourful eclectic design. the crown molding in kitchen/living room is grey with hardwood floors and in the bedroom crown molding is brown with brown carpet. we are buying furniture, mattress, etc. I want to emphasize the windows and pool view. we need the living room to double as a study with a desk that hopefully could face towards the window so we get natural light for my online teaching and my husband can see out the window when he is working as well. any and all ideas welcome~

When you say "nothing" are you setting up house keeping from scratch?

we went shopping this morning and it was all puffy couches, blocky furniture, etc. thanks for pointing out that this would not be the best fit for our small space.

we really do not have anything except for a few gifts we received like a vacuum cleaner and a dish set. still looking for silverware, pots and pans, dishcloths, etc.

I will post more pics as we get new things. thank you!

Where are you from? What decorating style do you like?

I read your post again and you said you like modern eclectic. Many stores in the States have the puffy couch look you describe. Try going on websites like Houzz, Wayfair, All Modern, Hayneedle to name a few. They all have the style selections you are looking for and most have a generous return policy. If something doesn't work just return it. Good luck and Welcome!!

Welcome! I wish you much joy and laughter in your new home and here in the US!

i would try IKEA if you have one anywhere near you. You can get everything you need there from dishes to furniture. For starting out, I think that is a wonderful resource. If there is not a store nearby, try online. The other online stores mentioned are good as well. Please come back with pictures of the finished space!

    Welcome! What an adventure : ) .

Many stores in the US, both online and "brick and mortar", have very good return policies and also free return shipping, so check to make sure before you buy something that you can return it if it's not a good fit, in terms of size or style. Also, for online shopping, stores have frequent sales, especially around US holidays, and you can also get emails with information about discounts, so it's worth signing up (perhaps with a different email) for some of the companies that you like.

Ikea has good and inexpensive housewares, in terms of pots and pans, dishes, etc.

Pottery Barn, which has stores and is also online, has a new line of smaller furniture intended for apartments. This might be a possibility for you. Here are their small space sofas,

    https://www.potterybarn.com/shop/furniture-upholstery/sofa/small-space-sofa/?cm_type=lnav

and here is their new PB Apartment line,

    https://www.potterybarn.com/pages/apartment/?cm_src=OLDLINK&searchredir=true&term=small%20space

Other online companies with more modern furnishings include CB2 and West Elm.

Are you in the US temporarily or semi-permanently or permanently? That might affect how you go about purchasing and decorating.

In addition to the things already mentioned, if you have a Macy's with a furniture department where you are, they have brought in some new things recently. We went shopping for my son's first unfurnished apartment and found some reasonably priced sofas and chairs, especially when on sale. They had both fabric (mostly grey and beige) and leather (beige, brown, navy, ivory and even peacock blue, apple green and terra cotta). And they weren't all puffy marshmallow man sofas.

I have also seen some great outlet/clearance items online at Joss & Main, but you can't try them before you buy. And it's hit and miss with what they have at the time you are looking. I had seen some things I liked earlier, but nothing when my son needed furniture.

I would like the idea of introducing some blue and/or green to tie in with the outdoors. It doesn't have to be anything as large as a sofa, but it could be.

I just bought a refurbished swivel lazyboy $80, so am not overly committed to it if it doesn't end up working with the space. My husband is pushing for an additional love seat in our small space. the one he likes is brown (Ashley furniture Naden) I really do not know how it's all going to come together. next weekend I think I will invest in a curtain rod and white curtains for the windows. Comments/suggestions welcome~ Thank you!
@lascatx Yes! I really was hoping to avoid the large poofy couches... even if just a love seat. we will see if I manage to be successful

@beckysharp I think we will stop by pottery barn next weekend. I really like what is on their website and need some new accent pieces to go with the refurbished lazyboy. I am hoping to find a pillow/throw to tie in the possible brown loveseat that we might buy in the coming month

@ishack17 my husband is from Ukraine, we met while I was studying abroad in China three years ago.

@cyn427 I wish we had an Ikea nearby! I think we could buy online, but there is nothing like going through the store and picking things out in person. it is nice that a lot of places seem to have good return policies tho!

Have you checked out Target? They're having an online only Home Sale right now (20% off). I'm not in the States so can't comment on their quality but I browse their furniture often and find it quite affordable and it often looks small-space friendly.

    Best wishes and good luck!

@suzmtl no I haven't! will check it out! thanks for the tip~

So we got the Ashley tulen loveseat in grey. Now we have a chevron turquoise and white recliner and a grey loveseat. To bring them together, I was thinking a grey blanket on the recliner and blue, turquoise, grey rug with glass table and white sheer window curtains.

Sounds promising. I would include some of the blue either in the throw, or in a pillow (gray and blue) for the loveseat.

I hope the apartment, and your city, are starting to feel more like home.

the white sheer curtains are not working out. any suggestions for the color of the curtains/rug?

What else is in the room?

What isn't working about the current curtains? The fact that they're sheer? The color? The weight? What do you need/want curtains for? For privacy, or against glare, or to look pretty, or some combination of that?

I would decide on the rug first, and any other furniture you need, like a coffee table, and only then tackle curtains.

I think the curtains would work but you need them fuller....how about another pair on added to the window...that will make a great difference. You could look for colored sheers also.....either J. C. Penneys or Walmart has sheers.

I think the white made the room look super yellow all of a sudden. okay I will get the rug and then decide on the curtain color.
What do you think about this rug? I looked at a lot of rugs and I think I am gravitating towards a solid color rug, maybe green? but I like this rug too!
We got a rug and some pillows! Need to lengthen the curtains and get something to put on the wall. Any suggestions?
