We are struggling to incorporate a desired island without disrupting traffic flow.

Can you post a drawing of what you're starting with? An as-built drawing from your designer maybe?

benjesbride The space is half new. The back 10 feet is addition space.

What are the goals of the project?

I assume the room below the kitchen on the drawing is the formal dining room?

What is going on to the right of the kitchen and the dining room?

Goal: Remodeling/Addition additional space, update outdated spaces. As with every addition limitations on setbacks, structure requirements leaves us with the space as it is drawn.

-Yes, just below the kitchen is a formal dining room. 12'5" x 13' - no changes planned for it.

-To the right of the kitchen is a screened in porch which we plan to 4 season as a sunporch/family room.

Did you ever consider putting the kitchen in the screened in porch? The planned kitchen location is tricky because it's in the middle of a traffic intersection there.

We have thought of this. The porch has a lower ceiling 7'6", 3" step down, concrete slab. We could essentially tear off and rebuild to match ceiling and floor heights, but $$$ trade off for not a whole lot of gain.

Benjesbride: thank you for putting so much thought into your reply — greatly appreciated. To answer your question, yes - we really like the idea of a banquette. Would it be better to eliminate the peninsula and just go with a run against the outer wall (and eliminate the door to the porch) and add a longer island? Something like this?

All kitchen companies provide a free kitchen design, and you can meet with professionals and get the right advise, trust me no one can give you an advise without visiting the site, dealing with kitchens is the most sensitive zone in the house.

Can the banquette cantelever toward the side patio instead of the back?

Do you have experience with residential long banquettes? They can definitely be beautiful, but users have mixed reviews. If given a choice, most folks would rather have a table and chairs. Banquettes tend to be a compromise when space is limited or chosen for their Form over their function.
