Many hybrid tulips will have difficulties in perennializing or returning and blooming year after year.......and one's climate really has very little to do with it!! It is just that over many years of breeding and hybridization, much of the bulbs' natural ability to perennialize has been bred out of them in favor of other features. Some varieties are more inclined to return and rebloom than others - the Darwin hybrids are quite reliable returners and just about any species tulip - but most hybrids do not put on much of a show after their first season. In fact, many gardeners regardless of location treat them as annuals and replant every year. So it is less about climate and more about the type of tulip you select :-)

The major issue about growing tulips in warm winter climates is the lack of an adequate chill period. They need about 12 weeks of temperatures around 45F (7-8C), either in the ground or in a refrigerator or cooler. Some vendors will pre-cool their bulbs before shipping to warm climate zones but in most cases you will need to do this yourself.

How to Grow Tulips in Warm Climates

The one showing a flower is not necessarily the only one which will bloom. In fact that one is rather premature. Usually the flower bud stays lower in the foliage for a while and then sends up a stem. Several of those look as if they will flower later so don't give up yet. Tulips do need a period of winter chill. So if you are really z10 then tulips may well not return each year.

I did refrigerate them, but only a couple of weeks in the refrigerator, and the planted them, they got some December chill in the ground , but January was hot ( 20°C some days), now February is getting cold, so yeah I think all of this disturbed their growth pretty much, I have a quite instable weather since I live in the mediterranea :/

I heard you needed to put them in the refrigerator for 2 months in my zone of 10a and the cold gives them what they need to bloom in the spring. Im going to try it and see how it works.

I read best planting time is early jan in zone 10. I'm zone 10b and will be planting 2nd week of jan.
