new countertop

The countertop on the sink side of the kitchen needs to be replaced. The sink is badly chipped, the faucet should be replaced and the grout around the sink has been damaged over the years. We love the Mexican theme and the tile back splash with the blue and rust color. Everything in the kitchen is in good shape besides the sink and countertop. Any suggestions?

I agree with a quartz counter. I notice that you have tile cuts along the base of the backsplash. That should help you a lot when installing a new counter. With care there won't be damage to the rest of the backsplash.

Anne is right to bring up damage to the backsplash. I've found that it's hard to remove countertops without disturbing a tile backsplash. If I were you, I'd start slow and be careful as you remove the old top. Then go with quartz for an easy-care option.

I would go with a white or black stone with very subtle veining. So it's pretty but lets the backsplash be the show. Black could be too dark with the backsplash and wood, so probably white. You could also do a wood if you liked that.

Luckily the bottom rows of your backsplash are the plain blue tiles, so if you had to replace a few, you could likely find a good match. I'd look around to see if anyone sells something similar.

You can totally remove these tiles from the counter w/out hurting the backsplash. you just have to be careful. score the grout between the counter and wall tiles and break carefully. run a good amount of tape and paper to protect the splash. the good thing is, those blue tiles are readily available. If you get a thicker countertop, you could just do away w/the bottom row of cut tiles.

black soapstone, or a black honed granite like Jet Mist, or Virgina mist. think about doing a copper sink. all of those elements work perfectly w/the Spanish vibe and your Saltillo. You have a wide open kitchen w/a lot of light. doing a black countertop is not going to make things look dark. black and your wood color would be a perfect match.

    soapstone

leathered virgina mist granite and copper

    honed V mist.

    and Negresco quartzite.

or go full out and do a blue quartz by Cambria

this is an option as well. looks like TajMajal quartzite or a very light colonial granite

One of the "solid white" hues of Corian, with an edge treatment in Corian "Nightfall" would be a very close match to your current tile.

If you are on a tight budget I would do a white Formica/laminate it has come a long way and maybe a butcher block island....otherwise a white corian....that size kitchen in quartz....cost wise will be astronomical!

OP , what is your budget? To remain true to the Mexican/Spanish roots, I certainly wouldn't do formica w/that mexican tile. Or Corian for that matter. (although this blue one would certainly match)

What's wrong w/granite? Princess White would give you the white w/out the price tag of the quartz

You could also do a walnut butcher block for the island.

it's great spanish-style colors and materials you have. I'd keep things as organic as possible.

Plain white quartz or white corian would look good with the existing tile.

Here is a white corian with colorful tiles...if you have a tight budget this will work very nice and add butcher block for the island or flip it and do butcher block on perimeter cabinet counters and corian on island.

Another vote for Corian. I like their white better than quartz. Your backsplash is lovely.

still like a natural stone better than corian with this style of kitchen.

black or the white,,,but I do like the walnut island

We think replacing the countertops with white corian, as stated above is a very good option.

Thank you for all your helpful thoughts and ideas.
I am planning on only replacing the counter along the sink side.
