    Typically, you would want 36" for walk space between any wall and an island.

      The island is 8' long with 24" deep cabinets. The countertop is 36" wide to allow for sitting space. The height of the island is 36".

      thank you! am planning retirement home - kit w/eating bar - dining room - family room all on one side, and on the other, laundry/mud room/pantry/half bath - bonus room (tv or formal DR) and then master suite and bath - so questionis, we are putting a full walk out basement on a kibbeautiful 8 acre lot, and one car garage in basement for future bedroom expansion - WHERE WHOULD WE PUT THE STAIRS? Beside the one car garage, I want to make a 'semi'formal entrance, but the front will have a 'forma entrance look... thanks

      the 'great' room will be all open and when walk in the 'front' of upstairs, can see clear through the bonus room to back of the house.

      The space between the chairs and fridge is approximately 36". The general rule for a walk space is 36" wide.
