I just had a similar situation in a home renovation . A good flooring company can help. We had the existence floors sanded along with the new flooring, and then stained, they came very close, you wouldn’t notice a difference in stain color unless you were looking.

I wonder why the guy in the video didn't remove the baseboards?

It's not about the floor finisher. The homeowner didn't want to pay the cost of removing and replacing the baseboard. Yes, that is an additional cost. If I remember correctly as I filmed and edited the job, matching shoe molding was added against the base. It also could have been personal preference.

I know it's not about the finisher - that was not what I meant. I just thought that it would be impossible to do that type of thing without damaging the baseboards, so I figured they would always be removed. Yup, shoe mold would make sense. Good video - thanks for posting it.

If you're planning to refinish the floor you're first step would be to find out the thickness of the product and the thickness of the wear layer. The product you have installed looks like a Bruce Hardwood product, which could be 3/8" or 3/4". If you're on a 3/8" thickness product, it would be best to rip out and start over. If the product is 3/4", it can be sanded and refinished. Lacing into the old floor would be more ideal if 3/4".

we just had this done this week. 20 year old red oak with brand new red oak. sanded new floors, then stained dark. no difference between the two. they stained with baseboards on but we had replaced all baseboards before installing new wood so no shoe molding
