Orvis has the best selection I've seen.....and relatively reasonable. My dog is chipped and also carries a tag on his collar with his name and phone number but it's become hard to read over the years so I am think of getting one of these collars as well. If he gets loose, boy, can he wander!!

Many people that exhibit dogs, own multiple dogs, or that crate their dogs, are concerned that with a "permanent" collar of any type that if left on the dog te collar may get snagged on something - a kitchen cabinet pull, a crate, or any of dozens of other things. Like yourself, they do wan identifying information and possibly License, Rabies tag, Rescue Group, etc, etc.

What many of us do is utilize two collars. The so called Tag Collar is of a "break away" design. If it gets caught and the dog pulls hard, the collar separated into two pieces and the dog is freed.

The second collar, the leash collar, is put on any time the dog is going to be leashed. Upon return, the leash collar is removed.

I am aware of two dogs that have died as a result of leash collars getting snagged - a Bulldog in a crate and a mix on a fence. In my case, maybe two times over the years I have found a separated tag collar lying around the house. (No idea if they actually snagged anything.)

Some leash collars are more difficult to put on and remove than others. (For example, my Greyhound really "needs" a Martingale collar so as to not slip off. I have my collars made with a Snap Buckle for an extra $5 from 2houndsdesign, Martingale Collars

Finally, even with the snap buckle there are times when I want to briefly put a lead on my Greyhound - as when I go to the door.

An old staple of the Show World is the British Mendota Kennel Lead. A simple one size fits all that can be easily slipped on and easily removed. I have one hanging next to my front and back doors. Various Thicknesses and Colors

And finally, all of those tagshanging can make quite a racket. Some want that reassuring sound, some do not. I am one that does not wan the noise, so I use one of these attached to the Tag Collar Quiet Spot - Various Colors

Thanks, Salti - that is informative. Those are nice tag collars. I will not use a Martingale collar - my dog snagged it on her crate door and almost strangled herself; fortunately I was right there and untangled her, but I refuse to use them from that point on. She has a traditional buckle collar now. I like the soft tink-tink-tink of the metal tags - I know where she is. I'll check out the other recs above, I'm a customer of both Orvis and Foster Smith, have always been happy with their stuff. Foster Smith dog beds are the bomb!

Just realize, a traditional collar also has the potential to snag on crates, etc.

That's why none of my dogs wears ANY collar - other than the break away - while inside.

If you’re going to leave the collar on, I would also recommend a good breakaway collar and it may take a couple of tries to find the right one. Our Vet has a line of collars that he trusts, maybe your vet would as well. Then you can always have the information embroidered on it afterwards.

Our American Eskimo wears a harness instead of a collar. Although he is groomed he is still very fluffy with his double-coat of hair. Collars scare me since they just about disappear on him. Of course I am afraid that he would strangle himself.

At home he does not wear anything (he is micro-chipped) and when outside is always on a leash.

He has a few harnesses (each being the same) and the company that makes them now sells a little device that holds tags and can be transferred from harness to harness easily. We just have to make certain that we watch the holder for signs of wear. But it is easier than an S hook or other device. He has his dog licence on the holder along with his other form of identification and rabies tag.

In the U.S. you have all sorts of pet related items that we do not have in Toronto. Since he weighs 25 lbs. and is very sturdy we absolutely have to try things such as harnesses on him. It seems that 25 lbs. is often the top range for a size Small but the Medium is too long for him. We buy everything from his groomer so he can be professionally fitted.
