March 2018 Blooms

last modified: 7 years ago

What is blooming for you now?

I have few succulents with buds, but only same blooms are opened as last month. Many aloes are blooming, so there is always some:

I posted photo of Kalanchoe with big, bulbous growth - looks like a gall - before. I didn't cut it and plant is blooming now. There are few buds on that branch with 'gall', and one that opened is deformed:

No idea Dinie, the label just says 'Aporocactus'....

You know where to get a cutting

You know, Conny (and Kara too), I was asking my sister why anyone would grow cacti, they're so spikey and taciturn. She has tons of these things. Then they started blooming. The sight was like potted vegetable auroras. So I was, like, well, okay. lol

That's what I used to think too Pagan.

Now I have two or three dozen or so. They're stacked on a top shelf in the greenhouse where I don't really see them. Every now and then I check for flowers, and when they're there, I move the plant to a prime spot :-)

Much of the fun of cacti is in the spines: shapes, colours, even absence of. And don’t forget the shapes of the plants, wool in axils or tops, colour of the body.

With ‘out of bloom, out of sight’, you’re missing half the fun, if not more ;-).

Small, lightly fragrant surprise from Neohenricia. I just noticed the bud this afternoon. We are much better friends now that I water them shallowly every other day.

    Dinie, Pagan

I already killed those...not sure if I can grow mesembs!!!

    last modified: 7 years ago

Sure you can, Rina. You'll remember how much I have groaned and lamented about being a mesemburderer. In my case, where I am, it turns out Ryan (Hanzrobo) was right about culture. It's the one that has worked for me the longest. So far. I still wouldn't rule out eventually killing my rapidly-building mesemb population. The hardest thing to get used to is the idea of having so much organic, water-sucking stuff in my substrate. Shudder.

Ahhh... Maybe that's the problem with my Titanopsis schwantesii. It's currently in pure pumice. Maybe it wants something a bit more organic? I initially thought is was a lighting issue but sounds like it could be the growing medium. Thanks for the insight, Pagan.

Pagan, that Neohenricia is so great. What substrate do you use for it?

Rina, I killed my first one too. That one was in 60/40 chicken grit and Oilsorb. I put my new one in pure pumice, and water it shallowly every one or two days, with a deeper watering every fourth or fifth day. Now it does a lot better, but it it not as nice as Pagan’s.

Din, I have my mesembs in 1/8" pumice and potting soil at 1:1, in small pots. I water them more sparsely than you do though, maybe weekly. Ish. And they're in the cold, under blurples for about 8 hours a day. Neohenricia are so small small it's hard to see when they etiolate but they do. Plus I had to stay up late to catch them blooming!

So maybe I killed them by keeping them too dry...

My lipstick plant is finally blooming! It went through some rough times right after I brought it home and I struggled to find the right spot for it in my house but it pulled through

Pagan, that sounds frightening, so much soil... I am not sure I dare do that. Do you have your other mesembs in the same mix? My Titanopsis calcarea is doing very well in pumice. It gets watered once a week. Both Titanopsis and Neohenricia are under LED lights since late fall. My lights turn off around 7, I took the picture of the Neoh. around 10.

Rina, I would think your Neohenricia was too dry. I have a small part of my first plant left, five centres. It is growing now. You can have it and see if you can keep it alive, maybe even with Pagan’s substrate. I have some pumice for you too. We just never met for almost a year...

Hopefully soon - as soon as you are ready for some shopping! :)

I know what you mean, Din. It's a horrific amount of soil. But when I was growing them in pumice, I couldn't water them the same way I water all my other plants--they kept wrinkling and drying out unless I water them in between. I don't grow these things for the joy of watering them all the darn time so I tossed in some soil in there and kept them in 2-inch pots.

Neohenricia, specifically, have very shallow roots, going down to only about a centimeter and a half. So I have to keep that in mind when watering.

Variety with dark pink flowers. I’ve got it as a cutting 7 years ago. It is an Indoor grower. I found it a perfect spot under south window with 6 hours of direct filtered sun. Looks happy!

A new one for me! My albuca circinata x spiralis bloomed! This plant has been very grumpy with me because I tend to forget to water it. I wasn't expecting a bloom this year.

The stalk showed up only a few days ago and already one has opened. I'll post when the whole stalk is blooming as well, but that might be next month.

Yellow flowers with a sweet scent. Somewhat perfumey.

    enjoying the clouds this morning.

2 Years ago I brought single plant, within 6 months I had half a dozen babies growing from the bottom of the pot..This is today..

..and one of my airplants starting to flower. Leaving in SoFL we have those growing like weeds. I usually attach them to succulents that occasionally loose the leaves. This particular one has been growing on a desert rose. Hard to notice indigo colored flowers peeking thru, so I usued 2 different angles.

Did one last photo session with the Graptopetalum paraguayense variegata. I wish the flowers were more impressive. At one point the main flower stalks were lying down and I was concerned.

Phone photo of first flower on my first mini African Violet. (It's kind of succulent, even though it isn't a succulent.) 2 inch pot. It's nice to see since it's too cold for any of the cacti to be flowering yet here.

New today we have Thelocactus lausseri, with blooms squeezing between the fierce spines. Second clutch of flowers this year.

Astrophytum myriostigma var. nudum - the largest cactus that I have grown from seed.

And one of my Lophophora williamsii, with both flower and fruit. I need the fruit, demand for seeds is growing as the weather warms.
