Time to Decorate

After a long process of redoing our kitchen and repainting our interior, it is time to decorate! You guys have helped so much along the way.

Went from sage green kitchen with oak cabinets and a gold and green interior, to a blue kitchen (BM Van Courtland Blue) with cream cabinets and shades of Gray for the interior (BM Revere Pewter and SW Colonnade Gray). I love it!

My dilemma is that a lot of my home decor does not work. I can’t afford to change everything and I don’t want to clutter the walls should we decide to sell in 2 years.
I desperately need advice.

I am posting pics of all the decor (lots of things as I am a Home Goods junked). My decor style (I think) is transitional with
some farmhouse. Don’t even know if it’s ok to do this. I’m having trouble blending things (some dark frames, some cream accents, some champagnes). Also posting pics of the wall space.

I can really use advice. Sorry this post is so long.

Perhaps a gallery wall with the white pierced artwork(s) and a couple other prints mixed in...

You think it’s ok to mix the light and darks together? I need decor suggestions for my entryway, living room (both with vaulted ceilings), 72” wall outside my kitchen (console table will be underneath) and one wall in dining room, and over sectional couch in family room

Do you think it would be ok to put some florals down the hall?

Here is a link to 50 model homes. I encourage you to shop for poster prints, which you can mat /frame. Walgreens has a great photo service for enlargements- watch for deals. http://tours.stevenjamescollins.com/public/tour/search

A common color scheme is key, along w/plants-yes plants & lighting.

Also, when we sold our home, we framed our 5-Hawaiian landscape photos in the hallway- 1) gender neutral 2) Subliminal message : yes you can afford this house and go on lovely vacations too.

    Wow! Thx for the link.

It looks like the tags are still on a lot of these items. Can you return them? For the cost of all these mass produce art pieces you could probably get a couple of nice pieces that are either made by local artist or something from minted if you want to save a little money. Some larger pieces will have a much greater visual impact than all these little things that just look like you bought them from TJ Maxx… No offense but art to be something that you love and that means something to you, not something you bought in a bargain bin! Maybe something that reminds you of a trip you’ve taken, landscape as suggested above?

K Hauss - those homes are beautiful

Briana. You are right. I really would like some large nice pieces that would make a statement. I am going to return a lot of the smaller pieces and I will check Minted. I am keeping the very first canvas in neutural tones and will shop around for something to coordinate with it for over my couch. It’s just that it is a very long wall. I do, however want to create a grouping somewhere with the white pieces. Thank you for your advice

I don’t think I would be very artistic. I love crafting but have no art talent whatsoever.

So I can actually find an abstract poster and do this. What about fabric?

Where did you get the posters from?

One very large art piece is so much more impressive and has more visual impact than many small pieces. Try a large art piece in your home and I think you will see a huge difference Yes, I agree that the mass produced art from TJ Maxx is not the best choice and the word art is even worse. Has anyone suggested trying art.com or great big canvas.com? This is where you can get large canvas art at reasonable prices.

Ishack17. Than you for the websites. I have looked at art.com but I never heard of the other one and will check it out. I also like Overstock.com

K Haus, you have some great ideas. How do you even start to research fabric when you see it? I love your Water Lillie’s pictures. When did you find them because I can’t seem to find them? My style is transitional with a little bit of Farmhouse too (I think).

Ok, found the Water Lillie’s. Beautiful. What size are yours? Also, any idea wher I can get a 30X30 “ frame? I have looked everywhere.

Ok. Forget the farmhouse. Those pics are definitely not me but thanks for trying. By farmhouse I mean whitewashed and gray woods (although I also love espresso).the white scrolls that I posted, etc. is that considered Farmhouse. Can I mix those with transitional/traditional?

No. I think it is too country. I was thinking of using the scrolls with the mirror, in my dining room as it repeats the window in my entryway and you can see both when sitting in the living Room. The mirror also reflects my bay window in the dining room, making the room appear larger.

My other option is to spray them champagne and put them on either side of my iris picture over the couch. What do you think of either of these two options?

Or I can spray two 35X15” mirrors that I found (original color is whitewashed gray) to place on either side of the iris picture

    Can you post the 35 X 15 mirrors ?

I saw this in a model home in So Cal, last year. Three thin mirrors hung horizontally surrounded by moldings to make the 3 feel larger. Thoughts?

Very pretty. I will post the mirrors tomorrow as they are still in my car. I really do appreciate your help.

I ordered this the other day in a 30X30 glicee print. I have a frame already from one of my other prints. I love the colors! Planning to put it on the 72”wall above my console table just outside my kitchen.

Will also see how it looks above the couch. Now this picture is modern. The scroll pieces and arch mirror are more farmhouse but I love them both. This is my dilemma. Can I blend the two styles and, if so, how?

It's really pretty, love that it is much more modern!

Look again at the link to the 50 model homes. COLOR is key to uniting styles. It doesn't have to be just one color, but shades and combinations of a few. Art near your entry can set the mood and tone of your scheme. Think of it an appetizer to the feast that follows.

If I'm seeing correctly, you have gray, green, and blue walls. Accent colors in each room can help pull it together. There are plenty of fabrics and art prints that have your base color combos. You just need to search. Keep in mind that you don't need to absolutely love each fabric. Use a combination of patterns within your scheme.

I just found this.I think it's an interesting version of wall art- quite unexpected.. Over your couch or dining room wall perhaps?

(Frankly, I'm all about faux ferns, because I kill them.) If you don't have or can't find an old frame, DIY the look w/ moldings. This "art" is versatile & could lend itself to specific holidays & seasons easily.

Not really crazy about it, but thank you. Here are the mirrors (disregard color)

Basically, if I use more contemporary or traditional art, can I still mix in the scrollwork or arched mirror or are they two completely different styles that will not work together? I am drawn to both.

These two metal arch scrolls are what I had next to this picture before. They are actually sconces and the sconce part attaches to it. I love them biut they always felt too small in relation to the picture. Therefore, I had a flower arch over each one to give it mor height but I don’t like the flowers any more.

    last modified: 8 years ago

Forgive me, I love the iris flower, but I do not care for the iris pic or other florals. The scrolls next to the iris seem too small of scale.

How would those two rectangular mirrors hung w/ rectangular white scrolls. Can you match them up in a way that they have 2-mirrors horizontal, scroll on either side?

    or gallery wall?

What about a mirror collection w/ scrolls? All hung together will make overall larger display. Spray paint frames and ALL SCROLLS in your desired color?

I like the idea of the mirrors and scrolls together, although the mirrors are shorter than the scrolls. I am going to play with that. Add a picture too? Are you suggesting that for above the couch, the dining room, or long entryway walls? Where are you suggesting a gallery wall? I do like those (although that means looking for more pics).

It is too easy to make the comment "use one large art piece for dining room wall & living areas." I don't suggest that, as large art is $$$$ and it is difficult to find one you will still LOVE in the years to come. Many pro-folks here will post such suggestions, so that they will get credit, if item is purchased.

    Ideas:

    1) A collection of personal prints,. Prints- because you can change the motif easily. Personal- because it is YOUR home.

    2) What would your 4-white scrolls look like w/ white framed mirrors or old photos? the tall scrolls on top & bottom, & flank the sides w/your smaller ones?

    1. Where have you traveled? What locations have meaning to you? (Download images of landscapes and enlarge them) Or....

    4) Since a dining room is place of holiday meals, photos of ancestors might be nice. If your photos are black & white, then old frames would look nice, or white frames w/ a colored pre-made mat board to unify them. Photos could be downloaded and printed 8x10, 11x14 or 16x20 (small poster or larger) size thru Walgreens photo- I suggest them only because l've used them before when we were staging for re-sale).

Gallery walls can be arranged in a balance, or a mixture of items. Most people find beauty in symmetry, which is my preference. Some like a random asymmetrical display all shapes & sizes & different items.

Art over a couch or on a dining room wall should be seen easily while the viewer is seated. It loses its purpose if a guest must rise from their chair in order to view it. If they must, then the picture is too small. Save smalller images for a hallway gallery or staircase where the observer is likely to be standing directly in front of it.

I googled some images of scroll decor:

This fabric pattern helps unify the art w/the seating area. You could do this in any color w/ pillows or - table linens. ( Google: Trellis print fabric)

The scrolls placed above & below a print

Hung one on top of the other, the scrolls form a larger singular piece. I can envision other items on both sides of you need to fill the wall space.

Your mirror doesn't mesh well w/ your scrolls The mirror coordinates.

gallery wall arrangement ideas for walls, mantles, staircase

These old picture frames could look nice mixed w/ your scrolls. (If you don't have, go hunting: Thrift stores, flea markets. You can always buy glass if the pane is broken)

I like the idea of mixing the scrolls with pictures. I have two scrolls, not four. (Actually, 2 long ones and one large square.). I don’t want to put any family pictures on the walls, in case we put the house on the market in a year or two. In essence, I am preparing to “stage” the house at this point. I also like your idea of a collection of prints over the couch. But finding ones to coordinate seems like it would be a challenge.

Is there any other place you can suggest to use the arch mirror? In the dining room alone? In the hall to the bedrooms? In the living room on the wall opposite the French sliders (to reflect the outdoors)? Or do you think I should just return it? Do you feel it blends in with the rest of my decor? Why do you feel the scrolls do not coordinate with the mirror. They were together on display?

Once again, thx for all your input.

I've toured model houses... There ARE photos of faux family members at the bedside tables, and main living areas. My husband walks in and says, "I wonder what our parents will look like or our kids." When staging for resale, you do not have to divorce yourself completely from your home. We removed our wedding photo, but kept pics of nieces posted. As stated before, a black & white image of a wedding hug was above master bed and the real estate agent said the female buyers responded very well to that and the framed DIY Mr & Mrs. If you have any dead animals hunting trophies or cow skulls, then hide those away in the garage. No dried flower arrangements, only fresh or faux plants.

Is there a mirror at the entry? If your entry is small, then could you place a wall shelf w/ mirror. Stage w/ small orchid plant on top of the shelf?

what are the bathroom mirrors -are they large mirror fastened to the wall? Give a powder room a fresh look.

We're there other arched mirrors-more of the same arched mirror? Two mirrors hung w/.entry table or bench below or if you had full length arched mirrors:

IMHO, The scrolls are intricate, while the mirror has broader bands.

I don’t have nightstands. I have a pier headboard. But thx anyway. I will probably use it i the dining room opposite my bay window.
