Can/should kitchen island extend beyond kitchen cabinets?

I’m looking for some advice on the placement of our future kitchen island.

We are renovating our home and have added space to our already open kitchen/living room for a dining area and larger living room. I’m adding a kitchen island with seating. Because my kitchen is not very large, the island or counter top may have to extend beyond the kitchen cabinet border. I have taped off where I think the border of the countertop will be. Will this look completely displaced being that the island will extend beyond the kitchen cabinets? If it helps, I will have open

shelving beyond the kitchen cabinets (nearly the width of the existing white wall).

It is ok to go beyond the kitchen especially if it is the seating. Make sure you have at least 15" clearance for knee space 18" for taller people. If you want storage under the seating area for things you rarely use, this would be 12". So 24 + 12 + 15 =51. If no storage then go the 18" to 42"Deep.

Your kitchen will serve you a bit better if the fridge is to the left of the sink for “ice, water, stone fire.”

i like things to line up, but I don’t think it’s a big deal in your case. Just make sure your aisles around the island are >42”. It looks like your island is very wide. Standard island with seating is about 41”. How wide are you thinking?

The refrigerator is stuck where it is now due to the fact of the new countertops.

I had no idea of the standard island size, I just eyeballed this size, so thank you for that info! I’m now thinking it will be 41” wide. ;)

Studio MB...don't mean to hijack this thread, however we are about to replace our current curved island countertop and looking to both extend our current kitchen island and change the shape to rectangular.

The current base of the island (without the countertop) is 3 x 5'6" and we would like to extend it to 4.5 x 7.25 with posts at either end. The inside opening will be 63" with a clearance of 19" for seating.

The reason for the weird/odd extension is that we would like to make the island as big as possible and still have the recommended clearance in the kitchen for prep and etc.

I would post picture of our current area, however unable to do so.

From what i read here people are answering your question without knowledge of where the island seating is. What sides of the island? The one side is at the edge of the living room but there is no plan showing your furniture to know if the seating plan will work with the island. Keep in mind visual alignment includes the stools at the island too. Setting design rules as to alignment is important and then to be consistent. There is not enough information to truly make an informed decision. The stools should be in blue tape on the floor too.
