Letting Cut Worms Regenerate

This may sound cruel, fellow wormophiles ...

I use my Euro Nightcrawlers for fishing. I usually end up cutting up the worm into several pieces, since a whole worm is too long for the hook.

What if, when I harvest some worms for a day's fishing trip, I cut the worm posterior to the clitellum, and put the anterior segment back in the bin? Theoretically, the anterior segment will regenerate, and I won't be decreasing my population.

Crazy or smart?

Thanks.
