Crazy. The only type of worm that will regenerate after being cut in pieces is Planaria (Flatworms), a species that kills and eats the normal kinds and Not the kind you want to be finding in your bins. OK. I stand half-corrected.

Most earthworms don't regenerate. Some occasionally can under certain circumstances, but chances are not good. It's better not to expect this as a given. If you need to cut a worm for a fishing expedition, that's one thing, but to expect that leftover worms will regenerate is asking a lot - more than most worms can do.

It has been my experience that they do not regenerate but they do not die if they are cut half way between the clitellum and the tail. Mind you this has only been by accident in about 5 non identified earthworms.

What else are you going to do with them? Put them back in the bin, if they live, great, if they don't, they'll be gone shortly.

So the escapees that get stuck in the carpet and dry out and die, I can put them back in the worm farm and they’ll get eaten?

You can. I'm not sure if they get eaten prob decompose? Life goes on.

Or you could put them on display around the edges of the bin to make it clear what fate awaits would-be escapees.
