To get the most helpful answers take photos of the other end of the room and the right hand wall.

Are these your furnishings? Do you have the budget for some new furniture? Here are some things to consider:

--If that isn't your bed, then get a full rather than a queen.

--Move the bed towards the window.

--Get a long, low bookcase with open shelves that you can use as a room divider and bookcase. It doesn't need to be as tall as this one but you get the idea. You want somethingto let the light in.

--Get apartment-sized, dual purpose type living area furniture that has simple lines, is up on legs for openness. If you're going with gray in the bedroom, then a smallish, gray tweed sofa with colors from an art work would look great.

--Next table on legs can open up as coffee table:

--Do get a large, amazing piece of art that will greet you when you come in the door. An abstract citiscape of San Francisco (or not) a SF map, but something big to pull the eye upward.

--If you have any kind of entryway, get a dual-purpose entryway desk height console with a bright chair you can roll underneath or out to living area. Ikea has rolling legs you can attach to their tabletops. Make that your desk and rollout dining table. Something like this, but possibly narrower or on a round tabletop.

Congrats on your new digs! DD1 went to college in San Francisco, and stayed for 10 years. fwiw, I don't agree with putting bed in bay window/next to window. You'll want to be further away from (even if it's just a tad) lights and city noises. A sound machine might be a good investment as well. This is my favorite (currently has a coupon to clip).

If you have the room (can't see what's to the left) to swap bedside table to other side/move bed a smidge, so it has a dual purpose/can be used with the sofa as well.

I'm guessing your TV is across from the sofa. If not, swap sofa and chair location, so that the chair is coming into the room. You'll gain some space.

I like the art housegal suggested. Gives a nod to the city. You could also find something fun and inexpensive in Chinatown.

Postscript. Thanks for the great feedback, comment and suggestions, the bed is a platform queen size. I like the idea on moving the bed side table to the other side. Great idea on sound machine; it does have the City noise....keep the comments coming!
