diy kitchen remodel

Now that my new hickory floor is down and fantasy brown marble countertop is installed, I am trying to figure out the next step ... I know I am going to put up some cream and green curtains, take down the blinds, and install some decorative trim on top of the cabinets. And I'll install a light colored tile backsplash soon.

But ... Do I want to paint my cabinets white or not???

What do you see in here??

Don't paint the cabinets, but definitely paint the walls.

I'm usually a light neutral wall person, but I think a dark gray or dark blue/ navy would really look nice.

Also, a pretty pendant above your sink would be a nice detail.

This one reminds me of your kitchen.

Darker walls, add backsplash, paint the trim around the window and a new light fixture.

I do agree with a new light fixture. That little one up there just doesn't do it for me. I'd like to make one of those Edison light fixtures that hand down from a piece of wood.

The paint is my favorite color. So that I won't change, but I do like the ideas.

This is what my kitchen USED to look like.

I also vote for not painting your cabinets. They look great with your new flooring and there’s a nice contrast with your beautiful countertops. I agree with the previous poster... a simple white backsplash would look timeless in your kitchen . I also think it would really help if you took down everything off the top of your cabinets, the two frames hanging on your cabinet, and the shelves above your stove. I think it would look less cluttered and freshen up the space.
Yes. I agree. I'm still in the process of fixing it up yet, so those are just up there for now, to be out of the way. I am in NO WAY a clutter person.
You need to de-clutter and take the stuff off the tops of the cabinets.

I’d tone down the paint, as well.

I’d do a white backsplash and under cabinet lighting. I would not do curtains.

My daughter bought the frames for me for Christmas. So those ones will have to stay. Thank you, daughter! However, I will probably move them over to a little 'coffee' nook that I plan on making in the future.

Don't paint. Please remove everything from the top of your cabinets; that area is not for storage or decoration.

A nice pendant light above the sink. No curtains. I think a new wall color and back splash and maybe cabinet hardware to match your faucet.

I like that rug in the lower right corner, very realistic with lots of energy.
    Do not paint cabinets.

Hi. I have the same granite and similar wood floors. I did paint the cabinets and install a simple white back splash. You certainly let don’t have to paint, but I wanted you to see what it looks like. I hope it helps. Good luck!

I think your first instinct is right.....If your photos are accurate I would definitely paint the cabinets!...there appears to be a lot of variation of wood colors...wood grain...in the cabinets .....and they also don’t appear to match the floor color...the new floors will sparkle next to the newly painted cabinets and the new wall color will also look better...

If you have room to add a pantry cabinet or have small closet nearby to convert into a pantry.....you can put away all the things that you need occasional easy access to .....along with bulky foods,etc....to clear up counter space for daily use and clear away all the things on top of the cabinets in the picture

A picture showing more of the area may suggest other ideas to make your kitchen even more efficient and beautiful

No space for a closet, but it is still a work in progress. I'm am in the process of adding more cabinets on the other wall.
If you have space for more cabinets you can include a pantry cabinet...this will be invaluable storage space in the kitchen for storing larger items with easier access
  • 8 years ago
I could, BUT that would involve buying something and not reusing what I already have.
Now I am confused...you are adding cabinets you already have?

    yes.

did you say you were removing the big, thick window molding? if not, that's the first thing I'd do. I'd trim the windows in smaller, white casing. As it is now, it's just so bulky for the small space. Or maybe you could take those and trim them down by an inch or so? at least do the one over the sink smaller.

mini blinds. can you replace w/something else? (this is how your window trim should look,,,

    roman blind

What's w/the hardware? you have cup pulls, handles and knobs. All are too dark and heavy looking.

The light over the sink,,,,replace w/a pendant of some sort.

paint the walls and tile. remove everything from on top of the cabinets and find another home for it. The spice rack,,,find a sleeker one that isn't double stacked. It just looks messy and crowded. you have a very nice countertop and soon to be tile splash. don't muddle it.

then evaluate to see if you still want to paint or leave them.

is the oak in great shape? if so, leave it for awhile. if not, paint them.

i would vote for paint the cabinet!
for me personally its a bit odd to see the floor color almost the same as the cabinet, i would go for lighter wood floor. but since the floor is already installed, i got 2 options:

    Option 1:
if you have big budget, you can paint the cabinet white (like pic no 1, sorry for the bad quality), not necassarily remove the window mold ( it could be match woth the floor if u paint te cabinet floor, and it turn into a great accent), and give stone (pic no 2) above the cabinets.

    option 2:
paint the cabinet LIGHT GREY (pic no 3), you can choose to leave the white wall just the way it is (or to be more fancy, you can do subway tile with the same tone as the countertop - pic no 4), remove the window mold, give a sleek glass window.

    option 3:
not painting the cabinet, remove the window mold, repaint the wall into white, i wanna suggest white subway tile for above the counter top but it will make it look "crowded and busy".

and this is something you MUST do:
-remove the stuff above the cabinet: make the cabinets higher (but it will un-reacherable if ure short), OR give basket box up there that match with ur cabinet color (white/light brown, pic no 5) and give the basket something to cover the upper part, so it wont easily dirty.
-change the cabinet knob/handle, into something more "uniformed" and smaller. cause i see big, not same knob/handle in each cabinet.

    GOOD LUCK!

    MUST THING TO DO:
    -remove the window mold
-remove the stuff above the cabinet, give a basket box (white/brown), give a cover on top of it so it wont get dirty fast.
-CHANGE THE CABINET KNOB/HANDLE into something more "uniformed" and match with the tone.

    option 1:
paint cabinet white (pic no 1 sorry for the bad quality), brown stone subway tile (pic no 2), or if you want to keep the window mold, you can give pic no 3 subway tile.

    option 2:
paint cabinet light grey (pic 4), paint the wall white, remove mold.

    option 3:
keeping the cabinet color as the way it is, change the knob, remove the mold, big glass window.

I would paint the walls 1st before deciding to paint cabinets.

    It's easier & cheaper.

Painting the cabinets would dramatically change the whole look.
