Gray laminate floor in kitchen with brown cabinets.

Hi there,
I am first time house owner . the first floor of my new townhouse has original tiles. so we are thinking of replacing it with wooden laminate. I like to do it Gray but the kitchen has brown cabinets and all my furniture is also brown leather.
I am not sure if it will look good. Also, the stairs leading up to second floor and the second floor bedrooms are light brown laminate.
any suggestions.

Hi Sumit!

I noticed from your post we have very similar color cabinetry. We are re-doing our floors as well and when we brought home some vinyl (heavy duty - large dogs here) samples, including the grey I fell in love with.... it didn't look right against our cabinets. We ended up choosing a very rustic darker color. If you go to the stores, they will give you a few samples of the flooring you think you like, so you can see how it looks against your cabinets, etc.

On the stairs, I would save myself some $ and add a bit of a modernized runner (not your typical victorian type)... it's a lot of wood for one area - in my humble opinion.

Most stores will give you samples that you can hold against your cabinets to make sure they match. At one time I had 3 or 4 here while trying to decide. I think I got mine from Lumber Liquidators. It helps tremendously. Good Luck!

Those cabinets aren't brown, they are gold. And gold does NOT play well with gray. It really really really doesn't. If you want gray, you will need to paint the cabinets to get it to work. And once you do that, you will need a new counter top. And then once you do that, you will need a new back splash and new paint colour....sigh.

See where this is going? If you switch the colour family on something SOOOO important as the flooring, you are dooming yourself to BIG CHANGES.

To avoid big changes, you can stick with similar colours that already exist. The floors are currently off-white. That works because the kitchen is WARM tones (gold + speckled brown/gold + soft yellow/beige walls). If I were to change ONLY the flooring, I would look at travertine-look porcelain flooring for the kitchen. It comes in multiple tones....you can choose a colour that is warm but with more of an up-to-date appearance. Nothing else would "have" to change.

As you can see, there is a REASON why they chose the natural oak coloured laminate....it works VERY WELL with natural oak coloured kitchen cabinets.

See how this works? Colour palettes can be kept happy-happy yet still change things out to look fresh and chic.

If you are PLANNING a FULL kitchen renovation in the next 7 years, I suggest you leave the floors until LAST...as in wait for the kitchen renovation to change out the flooring.
