Does it need a trellis? Wouldn't horizontal wires do? Two wooden uprights and strained galvanised wires.

Do you have cattle/hog panel in Japan? it is about $25 in the US and works great to support plants. I bent a U shape out of a piece and placed it open side down. I then secured it to the ground with T-bar. The final size of the trellis is a little over 6 feet tall, 52 inches wide and about 3 feet deep. I use it for my black berries, it is strong enough that it will support my weight, over 200 lbs.

Thanks guys. Ya, the ground is irregular, not that deep until it hits solid rock, so I don’t want to rely on any kind of ground mount. It has to be pretty much free standing. This makes the wire tension type stuff maybe untenable. Hog panel type approach is maybe doable, although weeds grow like crazy here, so I don’t want them getting tangled up in it. Four thick scaffolding poles make it easy to clear out the area with a brush cutter. Perhaps another approach is to lay down weed fabric around the base?

Thin Hog panel type arches are quite reasonable here, about $15 for an 8 x 4‘ section. Flat hog panels about 6 x 4 are under five dollars apiece.

Greg, I’m not sure I follow. Your hog panels are like 15 feet long and you arch and anchor them in the ground with steel posts?

edit: ok, I the I know what your talking about, I saw some photos. They sell only shorter flat varieties here, like 6x3. The arches are larger (above) but floppy and need support.

All right, this thing is holding up spring grounds prep. I guess the vines will explode this year, so better get it in place instead of limping along again.
