Does anyone have experience using sudachi as rootstock?

Now that I have grafted, I want to practice more ;). I just used three sudachi for marinading some salmon and gathered a few plump seeds. Could they be used as rootstock? Anyone know if they would work? Also, my cleft grafts still look green, but I have not uncovered them and will not for a while. At what point do I get an idea if they will take? I grafted them on Saturday, so it has been about five days.

Buy a Seville sour orange and plant the seeds. This was the best rootstock ever for almost any bad growing condition and produced the best flavor. I looked up sudachi for rootstock and found nothing. This should say something. You will not have Triteza in your area

Saduchi not listed on this excellent chart

So Steve, would you not bother with it? I don’t have sour orange now and when I tried to sprout some a while ago, they did not sprout. I wonder if those oranges from the store are too old. I have a bunch of small oranges on my Seville tree, but they will not be ready till late this year I suspect.

Did you pick your own Sudachi or buy the fruit. If you own the tree is it grafted. If so it is because their own roots are not that good. If you bought the fruit then go ahead and plant the seeds. Look for sudachi trees that are not grafted. If most aren't grafted then the roots are probably good for in ground. It won't hurt to graft to them but you will probably have much better fruit from a Seville seedling rootstock.

Thanks Steve and Silica! Steve, I did pick it from my crop. I have a few on my tree that I’ve been using lately. Silica, I’ll give it a shot. It may be an interesting experiment. Now another question..I have a few lemon seedlings remaining. Can I graft a ST branch onto one of those?

    YES

    Thank you Silica!

Hi Laura, what did you want to graft to your sudachi? I would expect it to be a fine rootstock for any sour variety. Given its similarity to yuzu, it should impart reasonable root rot / flood tolerance and good cold tolerance with maybe some dwarfing characteristics. The cost would be lower productivity than some other rootstocks and lower sugars, which wouldn't be super relevant for sour scions.

Pac, I have no specific varieties in mind now, I just saw the seeds when I used a few of them and thought about rootstock since I don’t have too many lemon seedlings left.

Laura, you are trying to hard to figure thinks out. You have plenty of tree’s to try out, just go by your intuition, just tag what you did for future reverence.

I have found an article using sudachi as rootstock. It works best for sour type citrus. The article was blocked from linking to this site.

Thanks Bob and Steve! Bob, should I graft branches onto my other trees? Steve, thank you for finding that. I’ll note that and use it for such. I figure if I can graft, I can share my creations with all my citrus friends :)

I completely agree with Silica's first answer, that would be my position too, Laura :) I do experiments with different seedlings often.

I would, it does’t hurt nothing. Experience is what you are after. You have to tag each and every graft or you going to mess things up. I just made 16 more beer can tags with a pair of scissors. Just find some juicy limbs and go for it. Knowing you, you will have grafting success in no time, Bob.

Bob, I make beer can tags too, lol!

I have several sudachi trees and they were all sold grafted to a different rootstalk. I love the juice as a lemon lime replacement.
