Are white walls boring?

I read this column today about white interiors

https://www.reflectingdesign.com/overwhelmingly-white/

I am thinking of painting white. Is white too commonplace and unoriginal?

White isn't boring. But the room you posted has a lot of boring, tired cliches in it. The space is great, though. I think white can look bland, overdone, perfect, luminous, cold, warm, mysterious,dull,fresh....just like every other colour under the sun.

It's not boring at all, especially if it's what YOU like. I love white walls but do prefer to see some color in the room. Just depends on personal taste.

I have a space not unlike the photo - an industrial conversion in Brooklyn. The photo here looks cool but it feels kind of empty. Do you think white has this effect?

I had most of my house painted white two years ago after realizing that almost all the rooms in my “Rooms I Love” ideabook were white. If you’re depending on wall colour to add interest to a room, than, ya, I guess white is boring. But if you have interesting furniture and fabulous artwork, then white provides the perfect backdrop!!! I love my white walls!

That room is supposed to feel rather empty, stark, minimal. Everything shown enhances that mood, including the low sofa, the envelope of white (note floors), the model. The exact same space (including the white walls and floor) could have rugs, art, and decor that convey a very different sensibility and style. Your new loft sounds terrific, but what is your style? How do you want the space to feel and function? edit to add: Start building your idea books specifically with your space in mind. After a bit,you will see what you like.

White can be very classy & sexy. Every element that has texture, pattern or even color is magnified even more under the bright light of mostly white.

It is good to see my article being referenced here. I find there is too much white around. The first photo looks very clinical and modern but I think I would get a headache living in that room. I'm not mad about white. It is too uncosy (?).

Didn't you ever have that teacher who insists "only boring people get bored"?! If you find white beautiful and inspiring that is the only thing that matters in YOUR home. If you're not bored, no one else matters.

I rarely see actually white in a home. My mom had it. White walls and ceiling, beige carpet. She thinks it feels cleaner though she has branched out into grey and has always had vintage-eclectic furnishings. Most homes I go into are beige, or greige, or grey...almost never sparkling, pristine white. So overdone, no.

All that being said, just like any other colour I think white should be a design choice. Not a safety or a fall back.

I love white interiors if done well . We collect art and find white or a very pale gray a nice backdrop to the art .
