Basement fireplace dilemma

We recently bought a 1962 rambler with a massive fireplace(42" wide, 30" deep) in the center of the 3500sq ft. House. The basement portion is a see through. We are trying to figure out what options we have to convert to gas or electric to make it more functional. Anyone have any good ideas? We are also considering tearing the whole thing out as it constricts floor plan options for our main floor remodel.

Don’t remuddle original details. They add immense value to the home. MCM is highly sought after.

Talk yo your local fireplace shop about running the gas for some gas logs. Then work with the fireplace as is.

I agree with Sophy, the fireplace is beautiful. I’d get rid of the carpet!

I did a see-through gas fireplace (new build) and at the time Heat N Glo was one of the only options. We loved it!

I am amazed that that is a wood burner with the carpet right up to it. IMO the fireplace adds some character to an otherwise huge space that you will be back asking how to layout the furniture . I have a 1956 MCM ranch with a HUGE fireplace between the kitchen and the LR I love it , mine id a wood burner hubby wants to do an insert but I love a real fire with big logs.Ours is 10’ long 8’ high and 4’ thickThe pics were in when we had a party so I rearranged the furniture.

Does it have a gas fire lighter now? Clean up the stone and have the chimney cleaned before you install new flooring.

This stunner was in our MCM reno-we sandblasted the shiny finish off and did a gas insert. SO glad we kept in intact, it’s a beauty and part of the original charm.

Great comments above. Agree, lose the carpet and if gas is available in your area go with gas vs electric. If you don't love the existing stone you can change the appearance with a different surface.

Love the comments. Thanks. Yes, the carpet is going for sure. Just trying to decide on flooring and the overall plan. There is no gas there yet. We have been told you can’t do gas logs in a basement?? We have been told there is no see through gas insert so you have to do 2 back to back inserts which takes away from the see through idea and also costs double.

Also this is a Minnesota basement so it needs to feel warm so worried if we don’t have carpet.

Vinyl that looks like cork would be the perfect ct MCM flooring for a basement.

Have you been to a local fireplace shop already? They will be familiar with local safety codes (and you should ask city hall, too). There are many electric fireplace inserts. Perhaps they can customize one for you.
