We are finishing our basement and need some advice for the dimensions of closets and rooms and placement of a door. Bathroom and laundry already exist, which we will remodel but not move. We want to include storage, an office/music room (combined), a play area, and a family room/area. The general location of the office/music room area is based on the egress window, since we want the room to qualify as a bedroom (for resale purposes), and the general location of the closet space is based on the duct work and i-beam that run the length of the basement and take away about 8" of head space... I figure, why not put the closet where the head space is lower anyway?

The questions are 1) exactly how wide each of the office/music room, the closet, and the play area should be and 2) where is the best placement of the door to the office/music room? The drawings reflect raw measurements, which means we'll lose about half a foot on each wall for framing (i.e., the "proposed plan" drawing, the play area shows 10'6", which means it will be more like 10'). Is that too narrow to be comfortable? The play area closet is 7' x 5'... If we squeeze a foot off that depth to widen the play area, is the storage still within normal standards for a play area/family room? If we squeeze one foot off the closet space, should we take a foot from the office/music room and give two feet to the play area? What is more deserving of that foot? Any other advice about the overall design are appreciated, as we're in uncharted territory on our first remodel project ever.
