I have same deal. I dug a trench a little beyond the house. Made a dry creek behind to collect the water and direct it away from the house. Added rock. Planted Hostas. Through the years the plantings have been added. It has stopped the water from coming on to my patio and has given life to the area.

The above poster provided useful advice that worked for them for how to deal with the mud issue.

If you aren't certain what you want to plant, or how it will do, you could use a rock bed and planters with annuals in it during the nicer months. I think hostas are sturdy, and the above poster had luck with them in a similar area. If you wanted color, you could consider burning bush plants, which can be trimmed to any size, are green in the spring/summer and turn to bright orange & red in the fall before losing their leaves. I have a couple in front of my porch that I keep trimmed to about 3 feet high, 3 feet across. They were here when I moved in 18 years ago and are hardy.

Whatever you do, it would make sense to do it over time to see how successfully the plants or bushes do before investing a lot in them.
