So one labeled Adenium 1.3 Obesum KO_ebay56 x KO_ebay36 would be Adenium 56 X 36 then?

One labeled Adenium 1.8 Obesum Apollo would be Adenium Apollo (could be any color)?

One labeled Adenium 144 Obesum KO_ebay114.jpg would be Adenium 114?

So maybe the first number after Adenium (1.3, 1.8, and 144) are just how KO keeps track of how he list the Adenium seeds.

I retain the Ko name until they flower and I name them.

I contacted KO a couple of years ago concerning this.

The first number is KO's stock number. The second number is the actual seed "name." Unless he's named the seed, i.e., "KO_ Apollo," a designation of "KO_ebay33," etc., is the seed name. For this example, the seed name is KO_33 or KO_Apollo.

If two numbers appear, i.e., "KO_ebay33 X KO_ebay 12," that indicates you are purchasing a deliberate cross between his KO_33 seed and his KO_12 seed.

Nice! Congratulations on your auctions. You may also purchase seed directly from Mr. Ko and skip the auctions. Seed direct from his webpage is sometimes cheaper and may have more choices. I'm afraid I lost my link to his page when I got my computer wiped. Maybe someone here will repost it?

A word of advice though. So far as I can tell, most of the variegated adeniums do not pass on the variegation through the seed. They are most likely leaf chimeras, which contain traits that can only be passed through cuttings and other macro vegetative reproduction. Those particular strains may have damaged chromosomes because they often throw albino seedlings which die. Damaged chromosomes and DNA strands, as well as chimeric traits, are fairly common in plants that have been treated with particularly harsh chemicals such as they use in Asia but are mostly banned in the USA.

I know this in part because many times leaf or flower chimeric plants are desirable among collectors who will intentionally use certain chemicals, or intense heat or radiation treatments on their plants or seeds, to try and force chimeric mutations. There are a number of scientific papers published on this topic, though chimeric plants can also occur naturally - usually fairly rare when not induced.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about when I call a plant a chimera, Google is your friend. Variegated leaves can be genetic (usually sex linked to the female plant) but in the case of adeniums, it appears to usually be chimeric. Once in a long while you can find one that passes variegation on through seed but so far it's rare among adeniums. If you are able to get one that does, you will certainly make some friends!
