They leaf out in late spring :-) That will vary by location and what weather you might be having but more along the lines of late April into May would be when you want to start looking for signs of life

You could take a few cutting now and place in soil inside the house. If still alive they will start budding out in a week or so. Then youll have a good idea if yours above ground outside survived. If so you Should see leaves by end of April if not a bit sooner.

I am slightly west of you in south-central Love County and mine usually leaf out by mid-April, but it is highly variable and depends on what the weather is doing. They were early for the last two years, but we had some very cold nights in February that were cold relatively late for us here, so the fig trees are likely to be slower than usual this year. For comparison's sake, we were so warm in the winter months the previous two years that the asparagus, which is the first thing to green-up here most years, popped up out of the ground in January instead of March. The figs never are as early as the asparagus, but I do start watching all the fruit trees after the asparagus emerges. This year? No asparagus yet, so we are having more normal (if not late) spring emergence this year. Most of the fruit trees at our house already have bloomed and are leafing out now, but not the persimmons and not the figs. That's normal. They say our Spring greenup is running about three weeks behind in general here in OK, so I certainly would be shocked to see the figs budding or leafing out anytime soon.

even if they don't leaf out.. they are not necessarily dead. Mine came back up from the base before.

Mine all froze to the ground this year again. Sigh.
