The main 'grapefruit' for our area is the 'oro blanco' which was developed at UC Riverside. I have one and they are insanely sweet and seedless. You'll get plenty of heat since you're a little inland from me.

I agree with Nil, 'oro blanco' is readily available at big box stores and it grows nicely in the SG Valley. It doesn't need as much heat as other grapefruits but still gives you the classic grapefruit flavor.

One other you could consider is called Cocktail Grapefruit, that's the name you'll see on the tag. It's a grapefruit pummelo cross. Someone on the citrus forum recommended it and I'm glad I listened. Also very vigorous, extremely prolific fruiting too. It is really only for juice since each fruit contains dozens of seeds. But each fruit can give up to a cup of juice and it is incredible and unique. It has a recognizable grapefruit flavor but it is very low acid, no bitterness, and has additional flavors that make it my favorite citrus by far.

I've tried Oro Blanco and Cocktail and they're both delicious. Pummelos have good flavor, but you have to work hard to get inside. The peel is tough and thick and the membranes around the sections are also much tougher than a grapefruit's. I have a kishu mandarin. The tree is still a baby, just 2 years old and less than 3 feet tall, but it had over 100 easy peel seedless fruit this year.

My vote is for rio red. In my areas the trick is to let them hang until you like the flavor. Rio reds and flames by june/july and redblush by late august. My orob's are good now, but they don't sub for the true grapefruit flavor that you want of your greyhound.
