Quartzite experts please help

2 weeks ago we had quartzite countertops installed in our kitchen. Before installation we went to fabricator site to re-inspect the slabs and do the mapping. There were no visible fissures or cracks in the stone. However, after it was installed in our kitchen, we noticed multiple cracks in different areas of the countertop. Also, on the inside of kitchen island there are 2 pieces of quartzite glued together that have distinctly different colors of the stone. A dark gray piece is glued to a very light gray piece. Please see attached pictures.

After communicating this to installer/fabricator, we were told that those were natural stone fissures and not the cracks. Also, they came to our house again to re-polish/buff those "fissures" so they are not noticeable and cannot be felt on a touch. Even after all of that we can still see and feel the cracks which were called "fissures" by the fabricator. We communicated about these issues to them again, however, from their side nothing was done to fix this problem and they advised us to hire an attorney or pay the remaining 40%. Please advise what should we do as the quality did not meet our expectations.

Yes the fissures are extreme and most likely caused by them. However check your contract with them. in my facility you have the option to do what we call a "digital slab layout" where you can pick what your seam will look like. if you choose not to do it, your seam will be chosen for optimal efficiency. Which means we do not care what it looks like, as long as we try to get a remnant out of it. IF your contract has something similar and you signed that, then a lawyer cannot do anything about the mis-matched look. However, they can do something about those cracks.

Also, if you do not pay the 40% they can sell you to a creditor to get it which can hurt your score. They may be able to reposes the stone leaving you without a counter. Or hiring a lawyer can cost more than the 40% is worth.

    Where are you located?

I would call another facility and see if they can do anything.

    Catt Combs:

Stick to stone advice, please. Once you install a top it becomes the customer's real property, like their toaster. You cannot repossess their top or their toaster. I paid tuition to learn that so I'm positive, despite not being a lawyer.

Thanks a lot for the feedback!

@Catt Combs - We haven't signed any contract with the fabricator, We only received a document with the price quote from them and did NOT sign any document with them.

I said they MAY be able to because I have only encountered it once when someone did not want to pay. and if its not paid in full its not technically theirs. If you haven't paid off a car they can repo it.

@Slava, They installed counters and you did not sign anything? I dont understand. So they gave you a quote, did you pay? how did you get the counters in your home if you did not have to sign a contract or something.

Ah, but it is not a car and a product once installed in a house is technically property of the homeowner. You cannot repo installed products in a home.

You can’t repo, but you can sure file a lien on the house.

No doubt Sophie for sure they can file a lien.

I don’t want to make a wrong impression that I am not willing to pay remaining 40% for this job. The main point is that I want them to provide me with a good/finished product. So far the quality does not meet my expectation and it was not my fault that they made cracks in the stone while processing, delivering, and installing it. Before the installation, I went to the fabricator’s warehouse to inspect the slabs and both slabs looked good except for couple of the areas where I found tiny cracks. I communicated very clearly that I won’t accept those cracks regardless in which part of the countertop it’s applied. I stayed there for several hours to do the layout for the countertop to avoid those cracks. And I made it very clear to the fabricator that I won’t accept any cracks in the stone and I would rather choose a different slab than get the original slabs with the cracks. They reassured me that there won't be any cracks and I dont need to reselect new. When we finished the layout, NONE of the countertop pieces had any cracks on them.

    And this what I received

They have cracked it during installation and fabrication, The "L" is a crack and also where they have mitred, the corners are the weakest if you put pressure on them from the clamp when setting the mitres

It is a very poor workmanship....

I would suggest that it needs to be replaced

Ps they can not enter your home, unless invited in. If they do they are breaking and entering as well as trespassing.

PS, Quartize does not fissure. It is a metamorphic rock. The fissures you see are cracks, Cracks feel rough and generally make the stone each side of the crack higher or lower. Where fissures are that a micro fault in the stone when formed. Have never seen a fissure in a piece of quartzite or sandstone which it is naturally formed from.
