Replacement windows issue

My dd lives in Chicago. New Hardie and windows on an older narrow city home. Asked me to post these pictures. What is your opinion of these gaps between the side trim and the sill? Every new window has this. The company told her this was on purpose due to flashing.

My window trim is Hardie and so is my siding and I don't have that on my windows. That looks just bizarre.

I agree. I'm very worried. So is she. They haven't paid the full amount. The interior jambs are messed up too...as if the windows are too shallow if that makes any sense.

Thank you Patrick. Doesn't that document seem to be referring to the area above the top of the window?

Do you think it also refers to the area between the side trim and the sill near the bottom of the window? It does look like there is flashing there.

I hope the installation is correct. She hired this company based on "tons" of great reviews on several sites.

But, this just looks so bizarre as CP says.

Have her contact James Hardie Toll-free phone: 1-888 J-HARDIE (1-888 542-7343). Have her share the company's name with them.

Did they install the windows flush with the interior wall? The installer started doing that with my windows upstairs and I stopped him.

I looked at this link for installation of the Hardie and don't see about 1/4" on the window trim? But I am no expert. I do know it's not like that on my house.

Also here are pictures of homes on the James Hardie site. I don't see any gaps between the side trim and the sills

Red post this in the Window Firum, the pros there will definitely steer you in the right direction.

Looks like it is proper to me - based on that link. I would suspect that the vast majority of installs are not proper. Many installation instructions call for some things that are not aesthetically pleasing so they are ignored. And the vast majority of the time, that is not a problem. But looks like they have a warranty exclusion. I think most people don't worry about the warranty. Hardie is a good product and most don't expect to use the warranty.

    Done Millworkman. Thanks.

DavidCary...I hope I can tell her it's fine. She researched trying to find a good company and felt good about this company. They have done the whole exterior including porch, windows and detached garage. A lot of $$$ for a young couple. Thanks.

Mark...I will pass along your good advice as well.

well..... I don't see that specific condition listed on the blog but when I go to the site, it doesn't show a window condition for trim like you have (which is stupid, btw, because yours is common) They show a simple picture frame around the windows with no ledge.., and in that case the vertical boards extend below the header board to the bottom and the bottom horizontal board fits between them....

I'd call and get a determination from Hardie for that installation.

I will say that like conditions usually call for the gap and flashing - but show the flashing extending out OVER the surface that protrudes more. (which would be super unappealing)

Yes, Janni I agree. I spent some time on their installation instructions as well for window trim and they only seemed to address picture frame trim. . And they were very clear about the flashing and 1/4" non-caulked gap at the top of the window but silent on trim like my daughters which I agree is more common.

as far as the flashing goes...the instructions show a z-flashing (??) on top that extends out...this lower flashing is just barely noticeable.

it may be done correctly...technically but these gaps are really unattractive. When you walk up to her house...it is the first thing you notice. It's like...what's with the gaps???

yep...she needs to show it to Hardie.

I would say that the window trim and sill are installed improperly. The sill should be pitched to prevent ice and water infiltration, especially in a climate like Chicago has. From what I can see, that sill is flat. Ice and water can easily get under that flashing, I would not accept this.

If you look through their pictures on their website, you'll see some that are done with a sill. None of the ones with a sill have a gap like your daughter's has.
