Amaryllis Seedling Care

Hello, I am currently growing Amaryllis plant from a seed (first time trying). It has been about 9 months since the seeds germinated and the leaves are on average 4-5 inches. They are grown indoors. They all started with 2 leaves and over the months, often the base of one leaf would have a redish brown colour to it, then it would dry up but the other leaf would look green and strong, several weeks later a new leaf will grow, and the cycle continues. Is this normal? What am I doing wrong.

Second questions: I have read that the shoulder of the bulb should be above the soil line. At this point, the bulbs are very very small (maybe about 5mm in diameter), should I be placing the bulb above the soil line?

Thanks
