Tropical nursery in the Triangle area?

Hi all,

I suspect the answer to this is 'no', but are there any local greenhouses that sell tropicals like citrus trees? I know that Home Depot occasionally has meyer lemon trees in the summer, but any thing else, perhaps something independent? I'm tired of getting subpar stuff via mail-order and spending $15-30 for shipping.

My two main places to shop are Logan's in downtown Raleigh and Big Bloomers in Sandford (logantrd.com and bigbloomersflowerfarm.com). Both will have citrus in the summer. Most of my citrus collection came from Logan's. Every year is different so you have to shop around. I have also found tropical fruit trees at the Lowe's on Walnut St. in Cary in the summer. It appears that their supplier trucks up plants from Florida and will sometimes stuff a few guava or mango trees on the truck. I mean they literally put one of each on the truck so it is really hit or miss. On occasion someone will post that they have found something for sale somewhere and you have to rush over because supply is limited. There is also Vedic Gardens in Cary/South Raleigh (vedicgardens.com) a small nursery that specializes in SE Asian plants. I have never shopped there but others on this forum like them. Also, the NC State Hort students put on a plant sale twice a year and they often have marginally hardy citrus for sale along with figs, honeyberries, satsumas, loquats, pineapple guavas, etc. it all depends on what they can get wholesale. They are known as the PAX sales and it seems they happen in April and Sept. Someone will post the details when they get announced.

Also there's a guy at the state farmer's market on Lake Wheeler Road in Raleigh that often has a few exotic fruiting plants in his mix of temperate fruiting plants. In the summer you can almost always find citrus trees for sale at the farmers market.

Vedic gardens is closed. John!! Someone bought the nursery and will have the businees open soon, no date yet!! Might ask Ralph if he knows more info!

Thanks. I have always meant to visit Vedic Gardens since we moved here in 2003. Guess I'll have to wait a bit longer...

BTW I visited Atlantic Gardening center for the first time today. A nice selection of orchids and tons of gardening supplies. They had ordered me some Rootmaker pots and they have lots left over, if anyone wants to try them for their container trees.

They were not open for public,.. you had to make an appointment. mainly online nursery.

The Rootmaker pots, ... I would love to take a couple or more, if you are planning to make it to the 2018 spring swap. Let me know what you would like, from my list!

Campbell Rd Nursery on Tryon Rd in Cary is usually able to order plants they do not stock. Ask for Gerald.
