Sudden Water Pressure Problem!!

I just bought my first home last week. We had some leakage under sinks and very minor electrical issues. The sellers fixed these issues. Final walk through we ran all the faucets. Ran the faucets and flushed the toilets simultaneously. Everything was perfectly fine...water pressure was no issue.

Now a week later I go to the house to start cleaning. I turn the hot water all the way up in the kitchen sink and it’s not full blast AT ALL just a small flow....same with the cold water. I go upstairs try all the faucets and it’s the same deal...just a low pressure flow. So low that you wouldn’t be able to properly shower. Went into the down stairs powder room and turned that faucet on while I flushed the toilet. Sink went to a dribble and toilet took FOREVER to fill up.

Any ideas as to why this could be? Nothing has been touched since the final walk through a week ago.

Have you checked to make sure the main water supply is on? Maybe the previous owners shut it off as a precaution when they vacated. You’d have water briefly until you ran out the water standing in the pipes.

Check with the neighbors to see if they are having the same issue. It may have to do with the municipal water source.

My house has a pressure reducing valve that controls the water pressure from the water main. If your house has a pressure reducing valve then you could have a plumber check it to see if it has failed or maybe it needs to be adjusted to allow more water pressure for the water coming in from the water main. Here's another vote for check if the main is turned on. Our water department is ruthless, somewhat. When you buy a house you have to go provide proof of ownership and then be home when they turn the water on.

Did you forget to set up water service in your name? The sellers most likely had it taken out of their name on the date of the sale.

If you have a well check the well pump is turned on. Also open all the water supply valves (so handles are parallel to pipes). The seller turned those off before turning keys over to us. If it’s municipal water have you transferred service into your name yet?

If the house has a main shutoff valve (not the one out by the meter) but typically somewhere -- inside or outside -- around where the water first comes into the house and someone closed it and then did not open it again fully, you could have reduced flow. These types of valves can take many, many turns to be fully open.

I'll vote for the main too. I've seen many cases where a main stop that hadn't been used in years didn't fully close, leaving just enough flow to make working on the plumbing miserable.
