I think a larger window would look odd (I'm no expert though). It would look top heavy to me. How does the bigger window look on the other side of your house?

I think some transom/awning windows can have some kind of mechanical device to open them. It would be good to have an operating window in there - you'd be able to open it and get cross breezes (unless you have air co.). ..and let the hot air escape in the summer

Thank you! That was my concern, too, that it would look top heavy. It’s not a problem on the other side because the gable window is the only window on the other side. The rest of the outside wall is taken up with a pump house for the well. Which again leads me to wondering if it’s okay that the two gable windows don’t match.

I think this is where an architect comes in (which I am not) . Can you see both windows at the same time from within (ie is it an open concept)? If not, then I would put a smaller window on the side you are talking about, because I think there are principles of window heirarchy that come into play, and the upper level window should be smaller than the lower level windows

If you get a smaller window, consider one with the same proportions as the lower windows, and the same look

No, you can’t really see the two gable windows at the same time when you’re inside the house. The edge of the loft blocks your view of the loft window. Thank you for your ideas! This is going to be a second little house for us, close to a river. Who knows? When we retire we might live here permanently. Thanks again!

In my opinion, either go with the same window size as the bottom windows, OR, if a picture window is your preference, than just make sure that it is wider than it is tall. That would keep it from looking top-heavy.It would look more like it was designed that way from the start. It would balance out the top with the wider width and the shorter height.

A round window in that space could be a nice addition and not too match-y

Put 2 up there and you would make a spectacle of yourself.
