AC painted with pop corn ceiling

last modified: 8 years ago

Hi!

I rent an apartment that has pop corn ceilings.

Today I opened up the AC unit (wow, the filter should have been changed at least a year ago by management), and I found the unit painted with the pop corn paint.

Question 1: Is this dangerous? Considering the air I breathe runs straight through this paint.

Question 2: Why paint the AC unit (that is well hidden by a neat door/hatch that you have to open), and why paint it so sloppy?

Houzz gives me error 500 when attaching the image so here's a link

Thank you

Sound's like what typically go's on around apartment houses every day. Call the manager's office and have them send one of their maintenance experts out.

    1. If it is dangerous, you should probably remove all of it from your ceiling too. Check to see if sheet rock was made in China, that poses even bigger health problems: up to and including death.

    2. you're not supposed to see it, it's a fur down unit and there is a panel that goes over that opening. While you're not supposed to paint it either, there are plenty of things one can do and get away with it --- in the rental industry.

The thought process is that the landlord doesn't pay for utilities, doesn't live there and their only motivation is to do enough to rent it and provide appliances that hopefully at least work. (efficiency of such is mostly non-existent in the rental space, because the renter pays utilities.)

Right / wrong or indifferent it's a box on piece of land, when your eyes are opened to various pitfalls as to how a place is managed and or cared for, you may decide that the amount of money you pay for the right to live here would be better put toward a place that you can manage and decide who works in your home.

Some of these things while being a shock to you initially is often times why people buy their own homes.

    Thanks for your responses.

Well, the internet says that pop corn ceilings can become a hazard only if you start scraping. I don't touch the ceiling but I guess there are some moving parts in the AC unit that could free up these particles?

"I guess there are some moving parts in the AC unit that could free up these particles?"

Then blow them around the room until someone swallow's or inhale's them. Wearing a dust mask would afford some protection.

    Robert,

Everything poses a hazard, you could walk across the street and get hit by a driverless car (Uber, just recently in the news). All you can do is attempt to minimize it, but don't get yourself caught up in this notion that there still aren't hazards all around you.

If you stick your finger in a light socket, there's a good chance you'll get shocked so does this mean we out law light sockets?

How old is the apartment building? If it's 10 years old or more since the paint was applied there is probably little chance any will come off unless you get in there and start scraping on it.

I understand your concern as you may have kids living with you, but this is life... as a side note there is probably more risk in the way of one of your neighbors leaving a stove unattended and burning the apartment complex to the ground. So put your worries into context, have a plan to deal with the higher risks in life.

Austin Air Companie, now, this starts to make no sense. On another note, autonomous cars are way safer than cars driven by people.

Klem1, please elaborate because you make no sense as well.

autonomous cars are way safer than cars driven by people... because?

You only know what you know about autonomous cars is because someone is telling you how safe they are. (The people who are ultimately trying to sell you one.)

When the world is full of autonomous cars, only then will you 'truly' know how safe they are.

In Las Vegas, they call this odds.

On the other hand your pain medication that is supposed to cure your one ailment gives you a laundry list of side effects, so that you can make that one ailment go away?

Yeah, nothing makes sense does it? Welcome to Earth, 2018.
