Rug Placement Help!

Hello Houzzers,

I have a small home office that I can currently redecorating. My current dilemma is that I can't decide between putting a small rug just under the futon area (shown below), or a larger rug that would take up nearly the entire floor, oriented the other way. Either way I'd like to layer a faux sheepskin or other shaggy rug under the desk area.

Although to scale, the rendering makes the room look a bit more spacious than it is. There is also a small (currently necessary) dresser on the blank wall opposite the desk.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

agreed. the sheepskin will get snagged on the chair feet and annoy the heck out of you every day.

regarding the larger rug: it's really hard to place furniture on top of a giant rug and then use a rolling chair over it. after just a few days or weeks, it will cause the rug to creep and kind of warp right where the chair is-- and it'll happen pretty quickly. the furniture will pin it down and make it super difficult to smooth out the warp.

so that being said, I think your corner rug under just the futon will be just fine. what might be throwing you off is the fact that you're viewing it from above. I'll bet that once you're standing in the room, it will look better. is there a similar size rug you can borrow to temporarily place there and see? or at least a way to view the room from a side angle in that program you're using?

Thanks!! The desk chair doesn't actually have wheels/roll. I think I might want to have a small rug more for where my feet are when I'm sitting at the desk!

I actually feel as though the top-down makes it look better than I'm visualizing it in the room... I'm having a hard time getting a picture of a different angle though. Mostly I'm afraid the rug will stick out too far past the futon and into the room.

Layering rugs also an option but I'm not really sure how I feel about that.

You might want to try just the shaggy rug in front of futon and no other rug it the room . Find a lavish throw in an accent color or print also pillows to brighten the room .

    Or perhaps:

Oh, ok! if the chair doesn't have wheels, you'll have better luck with rugs under your desk (but still, be sure it's stiff to stay flat between the desk legs). I totally understand the need for foot warmth.

I think the configuration directly above is really cute (with the purple rug), but not the layered one. if it were my office, I'd find a bigger version of that grey pattern rug and nearly fill the room with it.

I'm referring to this rug (but I'm biased because I'd really love to have a rug like that myself):

Thanks! I have almost an identical rug in my bedroom so was hoping for something different in here! I also had a feeling the layered one a) would bug me for being on a diagonal and b) would just be a bit much for a small room.

In a small room, you would benefit from rug that is large. You didn’t provide measurements of the room, but leave about 12” of floor around border of room. I am wondering if there isn’t a better layout for this space. If you could post dimensions and locations of doors and entry I can do a scale drawing and help you maximize space. Then we can determine best rug size and placement.
