Rated as hardy to zone 9 so should be fine - there are various reports of it growing in many areas of CA. You may get some foliar damage or dieback from a hard frost but nothing fatal or that can't be easily pruned out in spring.

Personally, I cannot be bothered with plants that require extra efforts for winter protection. Covering plans for cold protection is not something I would have any interest in doing :-) YMMV

Trust me! even if it dies to the ground IT WILL RETURN - all over your yard.

I have 7 of them. It does get some damage on the tips. Just cut it off in spring and it comes back. You can't kill it. I get frost normally about 8-10 times a year and it'll get damage 1-2 times. This past cold snap 2 weeks ago it had some damage.

I have it in a raised bed and no issues with it spreading. I cut it back 3 times a year.

Sometimes the longer branches if hit the ground will root, I just tear them out.

Hummers love it and the little bushtits eat the aphids.
