Lighting a dinner table that goes both ways

How do you light a dinner table that needs to go one way 90% of the time, but be able to swing 90 degrees to (allow extensions so the table can be lengthened) some of time? I thought maybe some circle lights (red) that can be placed as in drawing below. Or an amorphous light (blue) like a cloud that can be place diagonally. Or am I making a big deal out of this? Perhaps just plain potlights will do but I want to make a statement. Any suggestions for light fixtures that might work here?

The room is open concept and is near an kitchen island.

Think about your table setting instead. When you open the table to host guests, if that is what you mean, maybe candlelight or some small lanterns set on the table with battery-powered lighting can work for you. I do like that cloud idea too. If you install pot lights, I would suggest they be on a dimmer switch to soften the lighting for the dinner meal and enhance the atmosphere with table lightening.

No pot lights. Just put the chandelier where it will go 90% of the time. No one expects design perfection for the two times a year you put the extensions in. But for all the rest of the time, very good to have the right chandelier, hung at the right height and location over the 90% table location. If you select a chandelier on a chain, you can get "S" hooks that would allow you to temporarily raise the chandelier if that is a issue. Questions, How long is the table when at 90% state? Can you do a quick sketch of your room please. Include the kitchen island placement. How high are your ceilings in the dining area. Is there a window? How wide is your table? These are all variables that need to be considered.
