Kitchen floor suggestions?
Comments (16)Hi April- I ended up doing nothing for the time being. What I'd REALLY like to do, is what you said: take out the vinyl and refinish the floors. However it may not be practical. I know what's under the vinyl tile because we had to cut holes in floors for heat vents. Under the vinyl TILES, there is a layer of (really ugly) sheet vinyl. Under that is a layer of some kind of 1/4 hardboard (not plywood or particle board, and I'm not exactly sure what it is-- almost seems like a thick cardboard). Finally, you get down to very awesome 130 year old , 2 inch thick (!) tongue and groove pine, which I would love to sand and refinish. The problem is, that whoever put down the hardboard nailed hundreds of little metal pieces- about 1/4 wide-- into the pine and stuck the hardboard/cardboard down onto them. They hold the hardboard in place. I've never seen anything like these fasteners. They'd have to be pulled out with pliers one by one and then you'd be left with little holes in the pine. The holes could be accepted as "character"-- but I am completely overwhelmed by the job it would be to take out the metal pieces. Plus I'd need to take out the existing cabinets to do the job right. When I'm feeling more ambitious about it I may consult the local "floor guy" who does all the historic houses in the area....See MoreFlooring suggestion
Comments (2)Hmmmm....three mismatched wood floors inside of 2 feet of one another is not normally a great option. You can try to finish the room in a 'close match' to the two floors (which has already been attempted by the "bath" flooring). I would be tempted to go with something else. I would stay away from "wood look" anything at this point. Too many wood version spoil the home....especially when they are SOOOOO close to one another. It looks like you ran out of money/materials/both. So you can move to another material in another "look". Personally I would recommend a cork floor simply because cork is a GREAT carpet-replacement product. And at the same time the natural colour of cork floors (especially the chunky ones) contain ALL the wood tones you see in your photos...but without the LOOK of mismatched wood flooring. https://www.icorkfloor.com/store/natural-cork-floors-salami-11mm/ Check out the link above. Notice all the wood tones in the floor. Notice how it is a perfect match to the two woods you have showing in the photo? That's kinda what I'm getting at. Good luck. Carpet is always an option in bedrooms....See MoreFlooring Suggestions?
Comments (5)As light as possible...so long as the "gray" toned floor has a hint of warmth/gold in it, you should be fine. To me, the third photo (with the credenza and the plank on the right) looks like a decent option. It is quite pale/grayish with just enough warmth to pull together the gold wood tones. It appears to be a decent compliment to the counter tops in the kitchen as well. This is the type of colouring you are looking for = pale/washed-out with hints of warmth/gold in there to pull together any wood in the area....See MoreKitchen flooring suggestions needed
Comments (1)I would go with a mid-range color that compliments your other flooring as well as your kitchen cabinets. White floors are hard to keep clean-looking....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
