scissor switch stair help

We are building and unsure about how to handle our stair case finishing. We will have scissor switch stairs, according to my google search lol, and I’m wondering if the stairs need to be same throughout or if the finish/material can change at the switch or landing? We have hardwood on the main, carpet upstairs, vinyl laminate downstairs. Current plans call for carpet stairs but the stair case is not discreet and visible from the great room and also will have glass railings. Ideas?

    Floor plan?

Unfortunately I can’t share as I don’t have designers permission. I respect that it is not my design to share. I can get to the site to take a photo of it, still being framed, but not till Tuesday.

I understand without a photo this is hard. I guess without a photo it would be possible to say if you can have carpet on one set of stairs and then change to hardwood or vice versa? Not sure if that is common.

So my gut tells me the same throughout but that might change when you post the pics.

Somewhat related to this, generally speaking, are stairs with a carpet runner, or inlay of carpet, less expensive than all hardwood?

I think I would want the whole staircase to match. Whether that means wood to match the main floor or carpet to match the upper depends on how well the carpet compliments the wood. If the carpet color goes well with the wood, I'd go with carpet. I don't mean carpet that matches the floor but just carpet that looks pretty next to the wood. Some people find carpeted stairs easier to use and less noisy if you have people/kids running up and down.

This is flooring and carpet pic. Always hard to tell on tech obviously.

    "Unfortunately I can’t share as I don’t have designer's permission."

If you've paid for plans, and you must have if you're building, your designer sold the rights to you.

No, that is not how it works. Usually the rights are retained by the designer unless the rights are expressly sold.

Agreed Mark. Our contract is clear they are not ours. Which I respect.

Stair finishes normally are the same from one floor to the next. There are always exceptions, and the difference between 'okay' and 'odd' can be a very fine line. I would say the image in your ideabook of the carpeted stair coming down to a hardwood landing then continuing on with hardwood treads looks odd to me; but sometimes function trumps aesthetics.

I would agree that Alison can't build another home without paying again, but to deny access to drawings and specifications for advice is clearly not what the agreement intended.

I do not know the content of their agreement. I assume the designer owns the rights to the design and the OP respects the designer's right to use images of the design in any way they see fit, and it is agreed to by the two parties concerned in the agreement, exercising its intent.

Perhaps a sketch of the stair's configuration would be sufficient.

Yes we obviously have the designs. Interior and architectural actually. But we can’t reproduce them or provide them on a forum like this without permission. I’m not interested in getting said permission. I will take a picture tomorrow as I am many things but an artist isn’t one of them!

So we’ve decided to stick with carpet but will change our carpet choice. Once we get farther into the build will bring samples to the site and make some choices with the designer there. If budget weren’t an issue we would do wood with a runner but budget rules for now. I’m sure we can find a way to make it work. I did attempt a sketch too but it’s embarrassingly awful!

Have your five year old son submit his sketch (wink wink nudge nudge).

Alison if in the future you decide you want to switch from carpet to hardwood on the staircase, it will be very difficult to do. Also for resale, hardwood is definitely more desirable on a staircase

It’s a pretty mixed bag of what people do on stairs here. I agree it would be harder to change later but is doable. We did in our last house. Honestly we can’t have cost creep here on this. It is something we had wanted to have as carpet anyway so now that we are being guided that way we will go with it. I’m fine changing carpet colour and looking at that as a way to make it flow. Mark here is the sketch my “son” made ;)

As good as the drawing is . . . the image of the stairs will still be helpful.

Glass rail with carpet? No, just no. The entire stairs should be the same finish, no switch at landing. Continue the wood you have on the main floor.

If you choose carpet, I would definitely not do glass rail. Those two just don’t seem to mesh to me at all. And yes, entire staircase same material.

I missed the glass rail part. I don't see that carpet with a glass railing. I could see tile with a glass railing, LVP with a glass railing, wood of course, or maybe a very flat weave contemporary carpet, but not that.

As I’ve already said we will be changing the carpet choice so that it is more discreet and goes with the floor better. I trust that we can get this done. Will attempt to get a pic of the space today. I wasn’t able to get on site yesterday.

Carpet can totally be done. I’ve found a few links.

So after an insane delay here is the room in a better shot. We’ve decided to stick with carpet stairs and will be doing spindles not glass. Lots of this is budget related. We will absolutely be choosing a new carpet though and are just waiting on samples to compare. In the end we will bring samples to the site to check. Luckily carpet is one of the last things so there is endless time so to speak!
