Weird Kitchen Layout, Help/Advice Please!

My friend is in the process of closing on this fixer upper and will be doing a live-in reno on a tight budget. I've suggested to her to paint the existing cabinets and update hardware, remove the weird shelf to open up to the living room more and relocate her fridge to the wall that doesn't have any cabinets along it. I said to buy some cabinets, paint the same color and do a butcher block with open shelving above the side wall with the cabinet-height window. That way, she can add a cabinet/folding or storage space next to her washer and dryer (there is no basement to relocate those, and the utility closet is behind the kitchen sink)

1. I'm scared the fridge will "close off" the walk-through to the living room too much. She could put it in the corner by the big window, but ideally she would do a little eat-in dining bench and SMALL table there.

2. I suggested building a cabinet around the fridge to help it look more intentional.

3. I would love ANY other ideas.

Yikes. That is terrible layout. Nothing should be spent on this until she can afford to move the sink and range to the exterior walls in an L shape. Spending any more than maybe 100 dollars to spiff it up temporarily is a waste of money.

Don't be afraid of a plan that raises up the window sills above counter height. It'll be worth it.

My3dogs - the OP did post this in the Kitchens forum. If you look at the top of each thread, you can see the forums it's posted on.

Fiedajune. You and I must have different page layouts. When I look at the top of this thread, it only indicates it was posted in home decorating (the sub-thread, if you will). However, I'm in GW, so maybe you are elsewhere and see something different? From my GW perspective, I agree with My3dogs that there could possibly be access to additional help in the kitchen forum if the OP wants to try there.

Do not waste one penny on this save like mad. Your friend will need the help of an actual KD to get the best from this space and I can see potential .

Freida, I don't have that on my Garden Web view. That sounds like the Houzz side where you see various forums. I stay away from the Houzz side, as I much prefer GW.
