Kitchen layout feedback

Good morning, my husband and I are getting our kitchen redone this year and we think we've decided on a final layout that we are both really happy with. I'd like to get an outside opinion to see if we are overlooking something vital to having the ultimate kitchen for our space and budget.

This is the current layout of our space. We are removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room and relocating the washer/dryer and kitchen half bath to the small room area on the other side of the house. The french doors will be moved to the kitchen wall facing the deck.

Here is the new layout we came up with.

We did remove the one small window on the kitchen wall to make room for more counterspace/storage. We haven't decided on any flooring yet. But the cabinets will probably be a dark gray stain and the counters will be a white quartz. The island top will be a dark wood. We haven't decided on lighting either.

The back window overlooks the backyard. And there is a skylight in the ceiling.

The chimney can't be removed, but we might cover it with something if it's gross looking. And that beam going across the kitchen is apparently really structurally important... ;)

Move the french doors to the dining room instead of the kitchen. Then put countertops along that wall creating a U-shaped kitchen with a peninsula instead of the awkward island. I also suggest relocating the microwave and putting in a real vent hood since OTR microwaves do a horrible job venting.

The 3ds are just confusing. Draw a floor plan similar to the first one a much easier way to compare . The chimney could be used to build a really interesting storage cube I did that in my house .From waht I can make out I would have no wall cabinets on the window wall, the pantry and the fridge should be at the end of the run of cabinets so that the counter is not chopped up . The stove needs proper venting to the outside but it is impossible to figure out where the stove is in the new layout. Please just post a floor plan

Thanks for the feedback. I love good critiques.

The stove is against an outside wall and will be properly vented. We are keeping the microwave over the stove. I know it's unpopular, but it works for our house/family.

Just curious, what makes the island awkward? We had tried some peninsula ideas, and didn't like the way they cut the space. We had thought about putting the doors in the dining room at one point, but they would hit the dining room table when opened.

Should the tall pantry be against the wall, then the fridge, then the rest of that wall of cabinets/stove/microwave? I do like the idea of not having the upper cabinets not wrap around to the window wall.

The island looks awkward because it's not really an island. It's something between an island and a peninsula. It's also right in the kitchen entrance/fridge/stove space aka in the way. By making it a U-shaped with an overhang on the end you make it feel apart of the space, not just something randomly tossed in.

As for the doors, you can always have them open outwards or even go down to a single door. The double doors in the kitchen just seem like a traffic jam to me. Are you really going to want people constantly walking in and out while you're trying to cook/prep/do dishes?

Switch the location of the fridge and range. You don't want to schlep foods from such a distance for prep at the sink.

I think the better configuration is to keep the range and sink on the walls where they are and put a patio door to the deck from the dining room.

What is the distance between the chimney and the exterior wall where you're planning to place the fridge and range?
