Remove Tree Stump or .....?

I had a large pin oak tree that was diseased and dying removed from my back yard two years ago. The stump, which is about 2.5-3 ft. high and abut 25" in diameter, is still there. I don't recall why the tree service did not grind out the stump at the time but they didn't. I need to decide if I want to have it removed or figure out a way to make it not look so ugly. The only idea I can come up with is a large diameter bowl type planter filled with colorful flowers to set on the stump. Anyone have another idea or should I just have the stump removed?

You might turn your stump into sculpture.

This is a red maple stump.

Please have it removed. And then plant whatever tree or shrub that will grow to be the appropriate size for the space.

Any chainsaw carving artists in your area that could make you a little bear?

If not the planter on top doesn't sound too bad! Maybe a water bath for the birds too?

Yep,......planter, birdbath, sculpture, chain saw carving. Any can work with your stump if you want them too. And any of them can be nice garden components when done tastefully.

Even if you have the stump ground down there are still waaaaay more roots and stump mass below grade than you might imagine. You won't be able to plant another tree in the same spot.

If removing it isn't an option I would do a planter or birdbath. A large planter with something growing up, out and over would be my first choice.

Are you allowed to remove it? We have two stumps we can’t remove. They are off on the side so I’m not concerned but they are ugly.

Alison, why are you not allowed to remove your stumps?

You can buy a product to help dissolve the stump. I've used "Stump Out" but there are others. If you google "stump remover" you'll even be directed to sites that talk about DIY stump removal.

generally its one price to remove a tree, another to grind the stump. so, if you told them to remove the tree, thats what they did. no idea why they didnt say 'do you want the stump ground' but there you have it.

unless you know of a reason you arent allowed to grind it, just do it. otherwise it looks like... well... you cheaped out.

we have a large back yard with scattered trees. as they've aged out we have the tree service bring their stump grinder every 2 or 3 trees, more cost effective to have several done at once.

Our pest control told us the tree stump in our yard could attract termites. We rented a stump remover from Home Depot. It was not hard and did not take long

I would have fun with it. I had 2 stumps several feet apart under a large shade tree & I was able to fit a little white bench between them. I put flower pots on & around the stumps at staggered heights, making them my outdoor "end tables". As my back drop behind the bench & stumps, I spray painted a tire in a light mint color, hung it from a large branch & put several little flower pots with cascading flowers inside the tire rim. It's fun to look out the back window & see your handiwork.

I've learned that cutting a tree may seem like a daunting task, but it's a lot easier than removing a stump

"I've learned that cutting a tree may seem like a daunting task, but it's a lot easier than removing a stump."

Removing the remaining stumps and tree roots is usually not included in the tree removal service cost. This is also the reason why many people have old stumps on their property. Removing a stump is not easy but doable. They spoil the view. Hardly anyone enjoys looking out into their yard and seeing old stumps dotting the landscape. They look even worse if weeds and other vegetation grow on them, which inevitably happens over time. They take up valuable space. So you better remove your stump, but most importantly only from dougstreeserviceantioch.com.
